Reassessing Our Bedtime Routine for Reading Month
I was thrilled when Orajel™ invited us to celebrate World Read Aloud Day (February 24th) and National Reading Month with them. Together with Scholastic, they have launched Read2Me Tonight – a site full of resources and a “challenge” to inspire parents to read aloud to their kids before bedtime.
Can I be honest? Since my older two kids have started school and become independent readers, I have let our read-aloud routine slip big time. But that’s not fair to my 4-year-old J.C., and it sure isn’t helping his literacy and language development, either. Besides, even my two big kids still love being read to.
Plus, I’ve already shared how we’ve struggled with J.C.’s tooth brushing routine. So this invitation from Orajel™ and their Read2Me Tonight initiative is the
kick in the pants reminder I needed.
It’s time to get our bedtime routine back in order and make sure we’re including good tooth brushing and reading each night before bed. Here’s how I’m doing it…
The Read2Me Tonight Challenge + A Printable Bedtime Routine Chart
I created an interactive Bedtime Routine Chart with a visual schedule of all of the steps leading up to bedtime.

Now J.C. has step-by-step pictures to follow, and he can move a clothespin along to keep track of what step he’s on.
Of course, I included “Brush & Floss Teeth” and “Read a Book” as steps leading up to “Turn Out Lights.”
He’s a huge PAW Patrol™ fan, so his new Orajel™ PAW Patrol™ Toothbrush and Orajel™ PAW Patrol™ Anticavity Flouride Toothpaste make toothbrushing fun.
