Do You Know What a Visual Schedule Is?

A visual schedule is simply a picture chart for teaching kids routines or procedures.  They’re often used in the special needs community, say for kids with Autism.  However, I think they could be helpful for any child who is potty training or struggling with their bathroom hygiene.  Since I’ve been having a bit of a battle in the bathroom hygiene department with the kids, I thought it was time to try a visual schedule for their bathroom routine.  And since we were invited to try the Cottonelle Clean Care Routine, I figured this was the perfect time to do it.  Here’s how we made our visual schedule…

Making a Visual Schedule for Kids Bathroom Habits

First, I headed out to Walmart to stock up on Cottonelle Clean Care Toilet Paper and Moist Cleansing Cloths.  I find that adding the moist clothes as a final step really helps while my kids are still getting the hang of their bathroom hygiene.

Then instead of reinventing the wheel, I did an internet search for “bathroom visual schedules” and found a great site that offers tons of picture cards for making visual schedules: Do2Learn.  I printed their 2 inch bathroom picture cards and got to work.

I cut out the picture cards that worked for me and my kids and made one to include the step of using our Cottonelle Moist Wipes after wiping with toilet paper.

Then the kids helped me out them in order, glue them onto some colorful construction paper, and add some color with colored pencils.

We tacked it up on the wall in the bathroom so the kids can follow it step-by-step for their new “Clean Care Routine!”
