I remember a common debate while studying Art Education in college. Should we “enrich learning” by integrating other subjects (such as math, literacy, etc.) into art education? Or should we teach art simply “for art’s sake?”
On the one hand, art in and of itself is valuable in our children’s education. But I have also seen how enriching integrating various subjects can be for children. I’m sure there’s value in both philosophies, and a balance between the two can be maintained.
I don’t have to stress so much about that debate or balance now that I’m a full-time mama instead of a full-time art teacher. I can do whatever fun art activities I want with my kiddos. Yahoo!
And I must admit, this new trend of STEAM education – which adds Art to STEM’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math – looks pretty stinkin’ fun!
Here are 7 STEAM Art activities I found that I’m sure your kids will be begging to do…
7 STEAM Art Activities your Kids Will Love
1. Designing Robots with Qixels – My kids love Qixels. They’re very similar to Perler Beads
but only need water to set—no heat! Super cool. I love how Kate over at Picklebums made Qixels a full-on STEAM art activity with this robot designing challenge. (via Picklebums)
2. Evaporation Art – Let kids explore the properties of water and evaporation with this open-ended art activity. (via Handmade Kids Art)
3. Motorized Coloring Machine – Have the kids use a motor and plastic cup to build a robot who can make some art for them! (via Crystal and Co.)
4. Pendulum Painting – The kids can explore the force of gravity while painting, too, with this pendulum painting activity. (via Handmade Kids Art)
5. Marker Chromatography – Do this marker chromatography science experiment, then use the colorful results to make some beautiful collage or paper sculptures. (via B-Inspired Mama)
6. Morphing Drawings with Light Refraction – Have the kids morph their drawings with this super simple but really fun light refraction STEAM activity. (via Go Science Kids)
7. Marshmallow Sculptures – Kids get to explore basic engineering while making fun (and delicious!) sculptures, too. (via B-Inspired Mama)
