With the holidays approaching, our homes are about to be inundated with toys. And in today’s day and age, that means new tech toys, too! Every new toy catalog arrives touting the latest cool kids robot toys. And with the rising focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and STEAM (STEM + Arts) in education, that makes these tech toys a great option for helping kids practice hands-on STEM and STEAM learning through play!
We were lucky enough to get our hands on some super cool new robo-toys, GRiP and Joe Plow of the BotSquadTM, from our favorite robotic toy friends, WowWee Toys!
I’ll tell you about the BotSquadTM in just a minute, but first, check out how we increased the fun and creativity with a seriously simple-to-make playmat for kids robot play…
Make a Simple DIY Playmat for Kids Robot Toys
This DIY playmat for kids is super easy to make and crazy-fun. It only takes a few supplies you probably already have at home and some posterboard or cardboard. Check it out…
Supplies:
- 4 sheets of white posterboard (or large sheet of cardboard)
- clear packing tape
- poster markers
- crayons
- scrap paper (tissue paper, construction paper, etc.)
- aluminum foil
How to Make a Playmat for Kids Robot Toys:
First, overlapping your posterboard pieces about a half inch, use tape to tape them together to make one large 4 sheet by 4 sheet rectangle. This will become your large playmat.
Use a poster marker to draw a simple roadway-type maze on the playmat. You can use large shapes, lines, arcs, loops, “parking spaces”, “garages”, “ponds”, etc. Be as abstract or as realistic as you would like.
Add color with crayons or let the kids add the color!
If your robot toys are construction toys like the BotSquadTM, make some boulders to be moved by crumpling up some scrap paper and aluminum foil. Easy peasy!
Now, Meet GRiP and Joe Plow
The BotSquadTM is made up of GRiP and Joe Plow – the dynamic duo that puts the fun in getting it done! They’re unlike any construction or truck toy you’ve ever seen of their kind!
With their bright LED eyes, over 50 funny phrases & sounds, and can-do attitude, no job is too big for the BotSquadTM. They are the only RC robotic construction toy for juniors with real pulling and plowing action – not kid powered! In fact, both bots come with a remote control and bricks they can move around. And they are also Lego compatible!
Full of personality, GRiP and Joe have different personalities, have fun on their own but work together to get the job done. GRiP is a jack-of-all-trades who loves to grab stuff and haul it around for you. With J.P., you’d better move it or lose it. This pushy robot will plow stuff out of your way, and will also pull things that you hook to his tow.
And a bonus for parents: The BotSquadTM has comparable features to competing products but at a more value price point.
