A Kids Craft Perfect for the 4th of July!
This is a fun kids craft to make in the days leading up to the Fourth of July. And the end result: a patriotic, waterproof seat for them to use while picnicking and watching fireworks! And the process of making it is great for practicing cutting and simple lacing, too. Here’s how to do it…

Steps:
Cut the tablecloth; You’ll need to cut it slightly wider than your newspaper (about 2 inches extra to leave room for sewing the sides). Cut it twice as long as your paper, so the paper can be folded over with the newspaper sandwiched in between, plus an extra 2 inches (in our case, we used our small community newspaper and cut our tablecloth to 15″x 24″).
Lay down the tablecloth, put the newspaper on top, and then fold top half of the tablecloth over the newspaper. Trim up the edges of the tablecloth if it’s too large.
Holding both the top and bottom of the tablecloth together, punch holes in it around the three open edges.
Leaving 10 inches of cord on one side, thread the rest through the holes you punched. Leave another 10 inches on the other end. Cut the lanyard and tie the two ends together (the extra makes a nice handle to use to carry your sit-upon).
Decorate the sit-upons with glitter glue and stickers. Leave them plenty of time to dry (that would be embarrassing!), and then bring them along to put down on wet grass or other dirty spots before sitting.
A Few More Tips:
- If you have trouble punching holes in the tablecloth, hold it taut with one hand while punching holes with the other. Or buddy up; Crafts are more fun with friends anyway!
- While we usually use cheap plastic tablecloths, you can make sturdier ones by using thicker plastic or vinyl tablecloths – or even buying vinyl at a sewing or craft store. It’s harder to punch holes in those, though; I’ve actually used a drill to make holes in the thicker material, but they do hold up better.
