Sometimes, you just have to embrace the mess. Give in to the dirt and grime and mess of a childhood spent in the summer sun.
I mean… if my kids spend any time outdoors this summer (which I, of course, want them to do), they’re going to play in the dirt and make mud pies and get messy. Whether I like it or not. It’s just inevitable.
So I figure I might as well embrace it. Look at the positive. And see it as an enriching activity – encouraging creativity and imaginative play – instead of just a messy stressful one. (And earn some “cool mom points”, too.)
Our DIY Mud Pie Making Kit
We made some pretty creative mud pies a couple years ago. We even made a messy EDIBLE mud pie that day, too. But those mud pie making supplies didn’t seem to stick around our play yard too long. I think it’s time to surprise the kids – and infuse some imagination into their inevitable muddy play – with their very own Mud Pie Making Kit.
How to Make Your Own Mud Pie Making Kit
Check out your local thrift stores or yard sales for second-hand kitchen tools for your kit. And then supplement with some inexpensive kitchen tools and supplies. If it’s not going to be a surprise, the kids might have fun hunting for these items with you. Consider adding a variety of the following…
Mud Pie Making Kit Supplies:
- spatulas
- big plastic spoons
- a whisk
- plastic mixing bowls
- plastic measuring cups and spoons
- tin pie plates
- plastic plates
and pie server
for “serving” the pie
- a dish drainer drying rack
to hold it all
I love using the dish drainer to hold the contents of the kit. It makes for easy cleanup since you can just hose the whole thing off with its contents right inside when the kids are done playing.
Plus, it’s a cute presentation when giving this play kit as a gift. I made a printable Mud Pie Making Kit Gift Tag you can clip on to turn your Mud Pie Making Kit into a fun end-of-school-year, first-day-of-summer, or summer Birthday gift any kid would love.

Give the kit to your favorite kiddo and watch the magic happen!
Although… if you’re giving this kit to a child other than your own, be warned that their mama might not be as excited about the mess-making as you and her child is!
