Remember making mud pies outside when you were a kid? I sure do! My kids love making mud pies, too. So, I decided to embrace their inclination for messy play and plan a fun mud pie-themed play date. And, every play date needs a good treat, right?
Dessert Mud Pie Recipe, Perfect for Kids!
Well, there’s nothing better for a kids’ muddy play date than a chocolate mud pie dessert with Oreos and gummy worms!
With only 6 everyday ingredients and no food processor, electric mixer, saucepans, or oven required, this recipe for no-bake mud pie is easy enough for kids. But, it’s delicious enough for adult chocolate lovers, too! Let’s check it out…
What is a Mud Pie Made of?
It doesn’t get much easier than this simple dessert mud pie recipe.
All you need are a chocolate cookie crust, some instant chocolate pudding, yummy Oreo cookies, some chopped walnuts (if you like), and, of course… gummy worms!
But it’s easy to jazz up this simple mud pie recipe, too. Obviously, you can skip the chopped walnuts if you have a nut allergy in your home. And, you can add any number of ingredients into or on top of the chocolate pudding layer of your mud pie, such as mini marshmallows, dried fruit, fudge sauce, whipped cream, chopped pecans, or gummy bugs.

How to Make a Mud Pie with Kids
Some mud pie recipes, like the Mississippi Mud Pie recipe, will have you using cocoa powder and cornstarch to make homemade chocolate pudding in a saucepan, mixing batter for an oven-baked brownie layer, or adding a layer of ice cream. Those mud pies sound delicious. But, this mama doesn’t have time for all that! So, our no-bake mud pie recipe keeps it simple with only a few minutes of prep time. So, it’s perfect for children to make.
Kids love to crush the Oreo cookies, mix the instant pudding, pour the chocolate mixture into the Oreo crust, and then add the “dirt” and “worm” ingredients on top of the chocolate pudding layer.
My kids got such a kick out of making their own dessert mud pie. And, they could pretty much make the whole thing by themselves. Well, not without a little mess. But, the rich chocolate result was worth it!
