Stomp & Splash – Fun Outdoor Toddler Art!
This fun outdoor toddler art activity is perfect for little ones since it embraces their active nature and love of mess-making! Plus, this outdoor art activity provides an opportunity for toddlers to learn colors and even color-mixing if the paint is watered down enough to mix together when stomped.
While it is written as a colorful sidewalk art activity, we tried it on a snowy day and loved the colors on the white snow, too.
So, this outside art project would work in any season!
How to do Stomp & Splash Outdoor Art with your Child:
This EASY Outdoor Art Activity only requires some washable paint, water, a few plastic sandwich bags, and any kind of straw.
The idea is that you will fill each bag with a different-color of watered-down paint and air, making it a sort of balloon that can be stomped and will explode and splash paint all over the ground!
You can make any number of bags of any colors. We did primary colors: red, yellow, and blue.
If we had watered down our paint more, the colors may have mixed more to create secondary colors: orange, green, and purple.
It would also be beautiful to do bags of each color of the rainbow, and place them in rainbow order (ROYGBIV) before stomping and splashing them!
Or, you could make a color learning game of it by placing paint-filled bags randomly on the sidewalk, then calling out colors for your little one to find and stomp.
Caution! Make sure your child uses only one foot to stomp. Jumping on a bag with both feet could result in slipping and injury.
Stomp & Splash! Outdoor Toddler Art Activity
Materials
- 1 squirt washable paint (red, yellow, and blue)
- 1 cup water
Steps
Prep Paint Bags:
- Add 1 squirt washable paint and 1 cup water into a freezer bag.
- Position a straw in one corner of the bag with one end sticking out. Seal the bag up to the straw.
- While holding the straw and zipped edge of the bag, gently blow through the straw to fill the bag up with air.
- Pull the straw out of the bag while simultaneously sealing the bag to capture the air inside.
- Shake the bag gently to mix the paint and water inside.
- Repeat with a different color of paint in each of the remaining bags.
Stomp & Splash!
- Place the paint-filled bags side-by-side on the sidewalk (or snow-covered ground).
- Invite your child to STOMP on each bag to pop them and splash the colorful paint. Alternatively, play a game by calling out random colors for your child to find and STOMP!
- Encourage your child to call out each color as they stomp and splash. If applicable, identify any new colors from the splashing paint mixing together.
