Homemade playdough is always a hit with my kids. It’s always so much softer and smoother than store-bought play doh. And, you can customize it with different colors, scents, and ingredients, too!

Candy Cane Peppermint Playdough: An Easy Homemade Playdough Recipe for Christmas!

A photo of red and white Candy Cane Peppermint Playdough layered in a small mason jar alongside two candy canes.

Not only is playdough great for sensory play and creative play, it makes a cute DIY gift for kids, too. Today I’m sharing my favorite easy homemade playdough recipe. Then, I’ll show you how to turn it into festive Candy Cane Peppermint Playdough and package it into cute little homemade playdough jar gifts, too. Let’s get started…

Candy Cane Peppermint Playdough Ingredients

So, what makes this easy homemade playdough recipe so easy? First, this no cook playdough recipe only requires a few household ingredients.

A photo of the ingredients for homemade Candy Cane Peppermint Playdough, including salt, cream of tartar, vegetable oil, all purpose flour, peppermint extract, and water, alongside a kitchen stand mixer.

For the basic homemade play dough recipe, you only need all-purpose flour, salt, cream of tartar, vegetable oil, and water. Then, you just need some red food coloring and peppermint extract (or peppermint essential oil) to turn your plain homemade play dough into festive candy cane play dough that’s perfect for the holiday season.

How to Make Peppermint Playdough — Using a Stand Mixer!

What else makes this easy homemade playdough recipe so easy? A stand mixer! I love to use my stand mixer to make playdough, because I can make big batches. Plus, using the dough hook to mix the the food coloring in saves me from staining my hands!

No worries if you don’t have a stand mixer. You can make homemade playdough in a large mixing bowl and use your hand mixer or just stir with a wooden spoon and knead by hand.

Easy Homemade PlayDough Recipe Instructions

But, first, you have to make your basic homemade play dough. It’s so easy! Simply add your dry ingredients (flour, salt, and cream of tartar) to your mixer bowl. Then, with the whisk or paddle attachment on your mixer, mix at slow speed until thoroughly combined.

Next, with the dough hook attachment on your mixer, mix at slow speed while drizzling the vegetable oil (or any oil, like coconut oil or canola oil) into the flour mixture. Continue mixing until thoroughly combined.

Finally, with the dough hook still on, mix at medium speed while carefully and slowly pouring the boiling water into the mixture. Allow it to mix until it forms a soft doughy consistency that pulls cleanly from the sides of the bowl. If the play dough mixture gets too sticky, just sprinkle in some more flour and mix more. Likewise, if your playdough is still too thick, add a bit more hot water and mix.

Now, Turn Your Plain Play Dough into Candy Cane Peppermint Playdough!

After you get your playdough the consistency you want, press an indent into it inside the bowl and add a few drops of peppermint extract into the indent. Then, with the dough hook still on, mix at medium speed until thoroughly combined.

Now, take half of your homemade playdough out of the mixer and set aside. This is your white playdough.

Then, press an indent into the middle of the remaining playdough in the bowl and add some red food coloring inside it. With the dough hook still on, mix at medium speed until the playdough turns red. Add more food coloring and mix some more, if needed, for a deeper red playdough.
