Steps
Add 2 cups all purpose flour, 1/2 cup salt, and 2 tablespoons cream of tartar to stand mixer. With whisk or paddle attachment on, mix at slow speed until thoroughly combined.
With dough hook attachment on, mix at slow speed while drizzling 2 tablespoons vegetable oil into flour mixture. Continue mixing until thoroughly combined.
With dough hook still on, mix at medium speed while carefully and slowly pouring 1 cup boiling water into the mixture. Continue mixing until it becomes a soft doughy consistency that pulls cleanly from sides of bowl. Add more flow or hot water as needed for desired consistency.
Press an indent into the middle of the playdough in the bowl and add 5-10 drops peppermint extract into indent. With dough hook attachment on, mix at medium speed until thoroughly combined. Add more as needed for desired scent.
Remove half of playdough and set aside for white playdough.
Push an indent into the middle of remaining playdough in bowl and add 5-10 drops food coloring into indent. With dough hook attachment on mixer, mix at medium speed until playdough is consistent in color. Add more food coloring as needed for desired color of red playdough.
Notes
This peppermint playdough is fun to play with right away as is, especially since it's so warm and soft when it's first made. But you can also use it to make some super cute DIY Christmas playdough gifts, too. Simply layer the red and white peppermint playdough in small mason jars (or other airtight containers). Push a small Christmas cookie cutter into the playdough inside before tightening each lid. Or, use a holiday ribbon to tie a cookie cutter and candy cane around each jar. This recipe makes enough homemade playdough for two 16-ounce mason jar gifts.
