A Simple but Sweet Homemade Handprint Ornament
Handprint ornaments are a simple holiday craft that take mere moments to create, but you’ll treasure them forever. They are one of our favorite ways to decorate a clear ball ornament.
I will always be so thankful for the few times that I preserved my daughter’s handprint, whether with a salt dough ornament or a simple handprint on canvas. Even if we didn’t do it consistently, having those sweet reminders around our home remind me to stop and slow down. To enjoy the moment because she’ll never be this little again.

Capturing your child’s handprint on an ornament adds a bit of extra magic to the holidays. Year after year, when you unwrap this ornament you’ll pause and remember how little they once were and you’ll be so thankful that you took ten minutes out of your busy holiday season to make this homemade handprint ornament.
It also makes a precious present for grandparents, especially those who don’t live close to their grandchildren.
How to Make a Homemade Handprint Ornament
Materials:
- clear ball ornament – glass will allow the paint to stick better
- acrylic paint
- paint brush
- Mod Podge
Steps:
Cover your child’s palm completely in a thick layer of paint and have them practice pressing their palm flat against a piece of paper, or even better, have them grip a plastic ball to practice making a complete hand print. With younger children, you may need to lightly press your hand around theirs.
Once you’ve had a successful practice handprint, repeat with the actual ball ornament.
Allow the ornament to dry overnight and then cover in either a spray shellac or thin layer of modge podge to protect and preserve your child’s handprint for years to come.
