2 Cute Christmas Ornaments for Kids to Make

We had a great time making these cute little reindeer and snowman ornaments from styrofoam balls. They’re both really easy Christmas ornaments for kids to make, and they look adorable on our Christmas tree.  My son is really proud of them!  Here’s how to make them with your kids…

2 Easy Christmas Ornaments for Kids to Make - B-Inspired Mama

Reindeer Christmas Ornament Craft

Supplies:

  • Styrofoam ball (*see note below)

  • Googly eyes

  • Red pom pom

  • 2 brown pipe cleaners

  • Black felt

  • Bell

  • Small piece of red pipe cleaner

  • Ribbon and pin

*Note: I have used two types of styrofoam balls for these crafts. The softer type (with a rough surface) is suitable for either project, and is particular good for ornaments because they have a slight sparkle to them. These are the type to use for any craft that involves pushing pipe cleaners into them! I used the harder type (with a smooth surface) for the snowman ornament to create a more uniform exterior. This type is easier to paint, although I didn’t need to paint either type for these crafts.

Steps:

In advance of the craft I cut the brown pipe cleaners into quarters, then twisted them into an antler shape. F then poked them into the top of the ball.

He threaded the bell onto the red pipe cleaner then poked both ends into the base of the ball. Then we glued on the eyes, pom pom nose and some black felt shaped like a mouth. I held the ball steady for him while he positioned the items.

We just used white glue and at first it looks like they won’t stick, but we left the ball in a safe place to dry and they stuck pretty firmly.  I used a pin with a white ball head to secure some looped ribbon to the top to hang the decoration from.

All done, and ready for the Christmas tree!

Steps:

In advance of the craft I cut out the hat from black felt – one large circle (approx 2.75” diameter), 1 smaller circler (approx 2” diameter) and one long strip (approx 1” x 5.5”). I cut a tiny hole in the middle of the smaller circle, threaded some looped ribbon through the hole and knotted it. Then I assembled the hat – older children could easily help with this.

When the hat was dry I gave all the components to F to assemble. He glued on the hat, eyes, pom pom nose, and some more black felt that I had cut into a mouth shape.

Once the glue had dried we were ready to hang up our new decorations!

Love the reindeer! I have a few styrofoam balls that I don’t know what to do with – now I might know. Thanks for sharing with Afterschool!
