Getting My Mama Photography Game On…

So I have a fancy shmancy DSLR camera (well, not that fancy, but fancy to me!) that I use to take photos for B-Inspired Mama.  But I actually never use it for my family and kids.  Why?  I don’t really know how to use it!  I’ve never gotten out of AUTO mode.  And I never seem to be able to capture by busy kids without blurs from movement or weird colors from bad lighting.  But that’s going to change…  I met fellow mama and photography super-star Beryl Young at a blogging conference recently and learned that she offers an online photography course – Momtographie – for busy moms like me.  It starts on September 14th, and I can’t wait to take it!  But I also learned that Beryl offers a FREEBIE mini-class, too – One Ingredient Fix – that starts next week: August 17th.  FREE… I’m in!  In anticipation of these upcoming photography classes, I asked Beryl to share some simple photography tips for us busy mamas.  Here’s what she shared…

3 Simple Tips for Photographing Kids + A Free Photography Mini-Class for Busy Moms - B-Inspired Mama

3 Simple Tips For Busy Moms Behind The Lens

1) Plan
It’s important to think about your purpose before you snap a photo. What are the types of images you hope to come away with? How do you plan to use them? Can you envision them in frame and on the walls? Or can you visualize how they’ll look in a book or album? The more you can plan for your photos ahead of time and think about your expectations, the easier a snap worthy moment will unfold when it’s actually time to take the photos.
2) Anticipate
Kids move … a lot! It can sometimes feel like a workout following them around with the camera. I like to watch their actions and attempt to figure out the minute where they might pause for just a second. Or ask just the right question to get them to freeze for a moment. The more I can anticipate their actions, the easier it is for me to have the camera ready and waiting for their next move.

3) Time
I am guilty of falling into the trap of having my camera out for an activity the entire time and then feeling like I’ve missed being in the present moment. I like to set timers and only keep my camera out for a set amount of time during an activity. Once I get a few of the shots I’ve planned for, I put the camera away. For activities with multiple locations or parts I’ll set mini timers during the day to capture a variety of moments throughout.
