There’s a little Spring-time gift for you, Mama. It happens every year on the first day of April; a little gem tucked amidst those bustling Spring days of motherhood. To help you break up the exhausting monotony of school lunch packing and minivan running and sibling relationship managing.
It’s called April Fools Day.
And it can give you the laugh you’re tired mind is longing for.
At your kids’ expense!
Don’t feel bad; those kids take, take, take from you every day. As long as it’s not harmful to them, of course, it’s okay to play an April Fools prank on your kids.
Hopefully, it’ll give them a laugh, and maybe even make you the cool mom!
Here are some kid-friendly funny pranks to try this year – on April Fools Day…

Funny Pranks to Trick Your Kids on April Fools Day:
1. Have Them Help Cleanup a Faux Coffee Spill – Maggie, of Red Ted Art, shares how to make your own fake spilled coffee cups prank your kids on April Fools Day. Make one ahead of time for the kids to find on the breakfast table on the morning of April 1st. Imagine their faces when they discover the spilled “coffee” is actually hard when they try to help clean it up!
2. Serve (Sweet) Bacon & Eggs for Breakfast – This is a prank the kids will LOVE. Make these adorable – and yummy – Bacon and Egg Treats to serve the kids for breakfast on April 1st. I won’t tell if you have them for breakfast, too … and add the real bacon and eggs to your diet tracker. *wink*
3. Do Silly Things with Shoes – Inspired by Dr. Seuss – This might just be my favorite April Fools prank for two reasons: it requires very little prep (Can I get an “AMEN!”?), and it’s inspired by the Dr. Seuss book Wacky Wednesday. So, yes, you can absolutely fool your children and make it a learning experience at the same time! Check out the simple and funny prank over at Kitchen Counter Chronicles.
4. Fill Their Shoes Up with Something Silly – Here’s another one that involves the kids’ shoes. They’ll be shocked when they go to put their shoes on and find them filled with something silly, like beads
or cotton balls
. Check out Kids Activities Blog for more fun prank ideas like this one.
5. Serve – Healthy! – Purple Pancakes – Try to keep a straight face when you serve the kids their morning pancakes – but they discover that they’re purple! Check out this *healthy* recipe for Purple Vanilla Sweet Potato Pancakes over at Strength & Sunshine.
6. Pack a Sneaky Treat in Their Canned Fruit – This is a funny prank to play using the kids’ packed lunches. They’ll surely smile big when they open their snack-size canned fruit and see it full of candy instead! Find out how to pack the can over at Come Together Kids.
7. Or Sneak a Healthy Snack into Their Candy Box – They might not be as excited when they open their box of candy to find carrot sticks, though. Maybe keep a piece or two of candy at the bottom of the box? Find out how to execute this silly trick over at Come Together Kids, too.
8. Add Googley Eyes to Household Objects – Stick little googley eyes to things around the house – like on the kids’ toothpaste, on the carton of milk in the fridge, or on your kiddo’s juice box. Or make some giant googley eyes to add to bigger things – like garbage cans or outdoor bushes!
9. Serve the Kids “Brown E’s” – or Have Them Help Make Some! – Oh, goodie – another prank we can play off as learning. The kids will think they’re getting a chocolatey treat when you announce that you’ve made them some “Brown E’s”. Wait until they discover that they aren’t actually edible at all! Find out how to make “Brown E’s” over at JDaniel4’s Mom. Oh, and make sure to have some actual, edible and delicious brownies on hand, too, so the kids don’t feel disappointed for too long and can laugh along with you.
10. Take Them Marshmallow-Picking – Think you can convince your kids that marshmallows actually grow on bushes? Take them outside for some marshmallow picking to convince them. Here’s an entire prank blog post about just that over at Meaningful Mama.
11. Add Some Play Food to Their Dinner Plates – Raid the kids’ play kitchen for some realistic-looking play food
to include on their lunch or dinner plates. Check out how Amy of teach mama did this with Sushi – and find a couple more April Fools ideas from her, too.
