Super Simple Apple Taste Test
First, we had an Apple Taste Test. I picked up four kinds of apples from the produce aisle (even though there are many more): Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, and Empire. We observed the array of colors from yellow to green to red. And then placed each one on a plate labeled with it’s name and a few slices cut for tasting.
As you can see, Priscilla wasn’t interested in the slices – she wanted the whole apples! But Sawyer had a blast trying each one and describing the taste. He observed that the Granny Smith and Empire were a bit sour while the Gala and Golden Delicious (which were his favorites) were more sweet.
After our Apple Tasting, we read A Fruit is a Suitcase for Seeds
, and looked at the star (created when you cute the apple in half horizontally) that holds the apple seeds. Sawyer loved this book and especially learning where the seeds are in (or on) all of his favorite fruit.
Creative Apple and Stars Painting
For our Apple Art Printing, we chose some apple colors (red
, yellow
, and green paint
) to print with. We used foam brushes
to paint the apples before pressing them on poster board
to make prints. The star pattern didn’t come out as well as I had hoped, so I dug out a star sponge
and star stencil
to use, too.
Our Apple & Stars Pie
Finally, when we were done painting, the kids played while I used the leftover apples (NOT the ones we painted with – ha!) to make this EASY Apple Pie.
(Psst… I didn’t have flour in the house to thicken my apples, so I used a handful of Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix
. And of course I used a Pillsbury Pie Crust
, too. So, YES! It was EASY!!!) YUMMMMM!
