Whew! What a whirlwind of a summer so far! I’m barely getting this 4th of July craft for preschoolers posted before the patriotic holiday passes next week. But that’s okay — because it’s so easy!

A Super Easy 4th of July Craft for Preschoolers

Seriously. Just grab some sparkly star stickers and patriotic paper plates when you’re grocery shopping for your Independence Day BBQ, and you’re all set for this simple 4th of July craft to keep the kids busy at the 4th of July picnic. Plus, the kids will look so cute and patriotic wearing their DIY crowns for their Fourth of July celebration or parade!

Paper Plate Crown 4th of July Craft Supplies

First, let me disclose… I found inspiration for the paper plate crown craft part of this 4th of July craft from my blogging mama friend, Jodi, of Meaningful Mama. She had her kids use paper plates and buttons of different colors to make crowns for a Birthday celebration.

We adapted her paper plate crown craft into a perfectly patriotic 4th of July craft for preschoolers by using patriotic paper plates and star stickers instead! Aside from a paper plate and star stickers, all you need is a ruler, pencil, and scissors.

4th of July Paper Plate Crown Craft Prep

If you’re doing this crown craft with a preschooler or Kindergarten child, you’ll want to prep the plate first. If your child is in first grade or above, this prep would be great ruler and cutting practice for them.

Simply use a ruler and pencil to draw 4 straight intersecting lines across the bottom of the plate (like slicing a pizza). The lines don’t have to be perfect, but make sure they do not go all the way to the edges of the plate.

Then, carefully use scissors to poke a hole where the lines intersect and cut along the lines. Just do not cut to the edges of the plate. Make sure to leave a good inch or more uncut around the edge of the plate.

Easy Paper Plate Crown 4th of July Craft Instructions

Now, this is where the kids can help. Just flip the plate over and have your preschooler fold the triangles up to transform the paper plate into a crown.

You could stop here and start decorating with star stickers. But we decided to jazz ours up a bit more by snipping along the rim and folding every other portion down, too.

Either way, now your crown is ready for its glittery stars! We used some glittery foam star stickers I found at the store. I think the sparkly stars made our crowns look like fireworks! But any patriotic stickers would work, like rockets, Statue of Liberty, or American flag stickers.

My kids worked together to add every star sticker we had to make our crown super glitzy! We left ours with just stickers, but you could tie some red, white, and blue curling ribbon on the back, too.

With no messy glue necessary, this simple 4th of July craft is perfect for the whole family! It’s easy enough for big kids to do all on their own. Or, mom can do the cutting, then toddler and preschool kids can decorate with stickers. Either way, this cute homemade paper plate crown craft is sure to be a new Independence Day tradition!
