Letter B Activity [Amazing Action Alphabet Review & Giveaway]

One of the most important things I learned during my education to become a teacher was Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences.   Essentially, Gardner argued that children excel at different types of intelligence (ex. bodily-kinesthetic, musical, logical-mathematical, etc.) and therefore learn best through a teaching approach that stimulates a variety of senses and intelligences.  And that is exactly what See Hear Do”s Amazing Action Alphabet does.

“The Amazing Action Alphabet takes the already familiar look of an animal and bends it into the shape of an abstract letter. Now the shape of the letter is no longer abstract because the animal, which the child recognizes, makes the shape of the letter. This gives life to the letter, so it is no longer just black lines and circles on white paper. Once the child recognizes the letter as an animal, it makes sense to give it a name. And the name of the animal is the name of the letter; for example, the name of the alligator is A.

Now that each letter has a name and the child can easily recognize the animal in the shape of a letter, an amusing story gives a legitimate reason for why the letter makes the sound that it does.
Then we combine this with an approach that lets children see, hear, and do, engaging multiple senses and learning styles into the most powerful method for learning and retention we know.”

I love how the flipbook makes the program so easy, with the words to the songs and simple instructions for teaching the body motions that go along with them.  And the kids beg to hear the sing-a-long CD in the car on the way to school each morning.  I love how it encourages them to learn letter sounds.  And the workbook includes simple creative activities for each letter.  I thought I’d share my take on the letter B activity…

 

Letter B Activity

 

 

B is for Bubble Blowing Bear

 

What you’ll need:

• FREE B is for Bubble Blowing Bear printable printed on 8.5 x 11″ card stock
• shallow bowl of water
• tempera paint
• dish soap
• straw
• markers, crayons, glue, googly eyes, etc. (optional)

What you’ll do:

1. Mix some tempera paint and a squirt of dish soap into the water.
2. Have the kids use a straw to blow bubbles in the soapy paint water.
3. Have them flip their bear printable over and press it onto the bubbles to make bubble marks on the bear.
4. Repeat with different colors of soapy paint water if desired.
5. Let bears dry and decorate with googly eyes, markers, crayons, etc.

The Amazing Alphabet Workbook has a page to do this painting technique on, but I thought it’d be fun to make a big bear printable to decorate with the bubble paint instead.  We cut them out and the kids had fun decorating them up however they liked with markers, crayons, and googly eyes.
