Each October, when it comes time to finding a modest Halloween costume for girls, I can’t help but cringe.
Sure. Dressing like a sexy nurse for Halloween may be fun for adults. But, it’s obviously not a trick-or-treating costume I will allow for my 7-year-old (or even a 16-year-old for that matter). Sadly, more and more of these adult-oriented themes are creeping their way into the kids costumes in stores, like Spirit Halloween and even Walmart.
So, this year I have made it my mission to find cute and modest Halloween costumes for girls.
First, What is a Modest Halloween Costume?
As far as I’m concerned, a modest Halloween costume for a girl must have the following requirements:
- skirt at or below the knee (if there is a skirt at all)
- midriff covered
- no plunging necklines
Of course, every mama must make their own decision on the definition of “modest.” For example, I’m on the edge a bit with skin-tight Halloween costumes. And sometimes the packaging or website shows a girl in a pose that’s too grown up. But, if you look past some of the poses and consider adding a sweater
and leggings, there are actually lots of cute Halloween costumes that keep our little girls just that — little girls.

Who says girls can’t be pirates?! A modest DIY pirate costume is super easy. Just use a long sleeve white t-shirt, plain black pants, brown or black boots, a red scarf and bandana, and a dress up pirate hat!
