Perfect Fall Cookies with Maple Icing

The cool fall weather is all around us now. The trees in our neighborhood have lost almost all of their leaves. At this time of the year we love to get baking in the kitchen. The warmth of baking in the kitchen turns it into the true heart of the home. This fall, we wanted to find a way to incorporate one of our favorite Canadian flavors, maple syrup, into our baking. Maple syrup is something we usually include in our cooking, but not our baking. We found this lovely recipe for Martha Stewart’s maple leaf cookies . The cookies are light and crisp, but what they really need is icing…maple icing. So, we came up with this delicious maple syrup icing that was fun to decorate with and dries hard. My daughters had so much fun learning how to drizzle the maple icing over the cookies.
Homemade Maple Icing for Fall Maple Cookies at B-Inspired Mama

Maple Icing Recipe

(this is enough icing for half the cookie dough…we baked and decorated our cookies in two batches)

  • 1/2 cup icing sugar
  • 1 tsp meringue powder
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp warm water

Making Maple Icing for Maple Cookies at B-Inspired Mama

1. Whisk together icing sugar and meringue powder in a medium bowl.
2. Stir in maple syrup, the icing will become quite stiff…stir in the warm water…the icing will loosen. Add more warm water, depending on how loose you want the icing to be.
3. Place cookies on a piece of parchment paper.
4. Dip a fork into the maple icing and then hold the fork, tines facing down, and swing it over top of the cookies. The icing will run off the fork and create lines on the cookies.
5. Place cookies on cooling racks until the icing is dry and hard, about 15 minutes.

While decorating the cookies, my youngest daughter commented that drizzling the maple icing was just like splatter painting a picture. She’s absolutely correct. This is why decorating cookies in this way is such a fun activity for kids. Everyone loves getting messy in the kitchen and everyone loves enjoying a freshly baked cookie.

I remember hanging out with my dad in the “sugar shanny” when I was a kid while he boiled sap into maple syrup.  So anything maple brings back such “sweet” memories for me.  I can’t wait to make some cookies with maple icing with my kids while I tell them stories of my memories.  Thanks so so much for sharing, Jen!

Mmmmm. I like anything with maple on it. Everyone definitely loves a fresh baked cookie and it’s wonderful that the kids can have fun with the decorating too.
