Make Kids Language Learning Fun in the Kitchen!

Cocinamos!  (Let’s cook!)  Sophia and I had the opportunity to try the Spanish Baker’s Passport and made oat chocolate chip cookies together.  Baker’s Passport combines two of my favorite things:  language learning and cooking with kids.  Second language learning comes easiest for kids while they are very young, and that is something we have been taking advantage of with Sophia.  We primarily speak English in our household, but we have used ASL (American Sign Language) extensively with Sophia, which has had amazing results.  She is able to sign far more words than she is able to speak, but that makes our life so much easier!  I also speak to Sophia in Spanish, so this Passport was perfect!  Not only did this Baker’s Passport provide a delicious recipe for cookies, but it also incorporated a number of Spanish words and phrases into the cooking process, which I loved!

Sophia has just recently been able to help out in the cocina [kitchen], and has definite opinions on what should be served for supper!  I have found that when I bake with her, if I pre-measure the ingredients for her and put them in small bowls, it saves a lot of time.   The bowls also plays to Sophia’s manual dexterity ability at the moment.  For these cookies, I measured out the ingredients and set the bowls out for Sophia, and then helped her add them to the right bowl, in the right order, while counting in Spanish, of course!

I also played the role of “grown-up”, aka, chocolate chip police!  Once we had everything mixed up, and she had helped stir some and tried to pick out all the chocolate chips, we put them in the oven and she let me know she wasn’t too keen on waiting.  But, it was all worth it!  Once they came out, she thoroughly enjoyed the fruits of her labor.  The recipe was very easy to follow, with instructions that would be as easy for a young child to follow as an adult.  My favorite thing about it was that not only did it list the required ingredients (ie, 1 cup of flour), but it also said what kitchen utensils you would need.  For children just learning to cook, having this extra check list will make their lives that much easier.  As an added bonus, step 10 is to clean the dishes!  The galletas [cookies] were absolutely delicious, and I enjoyed that they had oats in them, making them slightly healthier in my eyes.

Plus, you can use Baker’s Passport as a way to teach the kids about compassion and giving, too, since every time a passport is purchased, Baking Passport will donate $1 to Action Against Hunger.

Do you do any kids language learning in your house?  Ever thought about doing it in the kitchen?!  I’d love to hear how you introduce second language learning to your kids in the comments below!
