It’s warming up here in the Northeast, which means more family time outside and more healthy, active outdoor play. And what better way to spend time as a family outside AND get some active play in than to go on a family bike ride?

Kids Bike & Kids Bike Helmet Sizes – Made Easy!
Schwinn SmartStart wants to make sure your family bike riding is safe and FUN. So they’ve simplified kids bike sizing and kids bike helmet sizes with a helpful Ride Guide. They’ve also made purchasing the right bike super easy by offering awesome Schwinn SmartStart bicycles right on Amazon. And (maybe best of all) they’re holding an incredible Family Fun Ahead Schwinn Sweepstakes, too!
The Ride Guide Makes Kids Bike and Kids Bike Helmet Sizes Easy!
It’s essential to have the right bike size and bike helmet size for kids. Not only does it make riding easier for young learners, but it ensures their safety as well. The Schwinn SmartStart Ride Guide makes choosing the right size bicycle and bike helmet easy!

Choosing the Best Bike Size for Your Child
The guide shows how kids bicycles are categorized by bike wheel size, and includes the average age and rider height for each wheel size. Since height varies, the best practice would be to measure your child’s height, then choose the best-sized bike based on that. However, notice the smaller print explaining that regardless of the child’s age, there should be no more than 3 inches of room between the rider and the top tube of the bike.
And remember, with Schwinn SmartStart bikes you don’t have to worry about your child outgrowing their bike quickly. Schwinn SmartStart bicycles are designed to “grow” with kids. When you raise the saddle of the bike as your child grows (which is super easy), the angle as well as the distance from the seat to the handlebars and seat and to the pedals increases, too. So the Schwinn SmartStart bike is a great investment. (I didn’t notice during our bike riding fun, but after seeing the photos it looks like J.C. is ready to have his bike’s saddle raised.)
Navigating Kids Bike Helmet Sizes
The guide also shows how to choose the best kids bike helmet for your child. Bike helmets come in Toddler, Child, and Youth sizes. And when you go to Amazon to purchase them, you’ll see each size has a suggested age range. However, children’s heads vary regardless of age. (My kids have BIG heads for their ages. Darn genetics!) So, the Schwinn SmartStart Ride Guide shows how to easily measure your child’s head circumference to get the perfect fit!
Learn from my mistake… I went by age when purchasing my 6-year-old J.C.’s Schwinn SmartStart Bike Helmet on Amazon. As you can see in the photos, the helmet is on the smaller end of proper fit. So I measured his head to be sure the helmet was still safe. His measurement was right around 20 inches. So the Child Helmet size (that I purchased) still works, but the Youth Helmet size would have worked, too, and allowed for more growth. Live and learn!

Be SAFE!
Obviously, your outdoor family fun won’t be very fun if someone gets hurt. So Schwinn SmartStart includes one of the most important kids bike safety tips on their Ride Guide, too. Make sure to choose a safe location for family bike riding; sidewalks and parks are best. We picked the dead-end dirt-road driveway at Mi-Mi and Pop-Pop’s house and stayed close by to monitor. If we were riding our bikes, too, we would have chosen a bike trail or sidewalk instead.

I’ve always loved cycling. One time I cycled over a 1000 miles along the Danube.
Great to know that choosing a helmet size for the little ones is nice and easy.
Thanks for the guide 🙂
