Back-to-school time also means back-to-sickness for many families.

With kids spending more time indoors (often in one classroom) germs start running rampant and resulting in the spread of colds, flus, and more – yuck!

So it’s a good idea to start getting the kids practicing healthy habits NOW, before heading back to school, so those habits are formed before they get there.  I’ve gathered some fun ideas for promoting health and wellness in kids.

And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other leading health organizations, proper hand hygiene is one of the most important preventative measures you can take to reduce your risk of illness and infection.

5 Simple but Fun Ways to Ensure Healthy Kids

Get Moving – Get your kids exercising with fun games and activities; try setting up an obstacle course and go through it with them!

Get Outside – Exercise and movement come more naturally in nature.  So get those kids outside and having fun.  Try one of these outdoor activities for kids.

Practice Good Nutrition – Practice good nutrition with your kids; help them learn about healthy food and why it’s important to their bodies.  Have the kids use this free printable to ensure a healthy kid-packed lunch!

Learn About Germs – Teach the kids about the science of illness and germs; Put some glitter on one of your hands, then shake hands with the kids and watch the “germs” quickly spread around the house.

Make Hand Sanitizing and Handwashing Fun – Sing fun songs while washing hands.  Use silly soap containers.  Let the kids decorate their own hand sanitizer bottle for when soap and water aren’t handy.

Check out how we used construction paper, markers, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners to make “Sir Germs-Be-Gone!  Wouldn’t he make a cute Back to School Teacher Gift, too?

The glitter idea for teaching about the spread of germs is so clever! I know my kids will have fun learning with that idea-and recognize the importance of hand washing. Purell is a staple in our lives-diaper bag and car are where we keep it.

Great tips, I used to carry a bottle of hand santizer in my son’s diaper bag. I am not sure what happened to it. I also make sure that I have wipes too. They are perfect for cleaning up little hands, cleaning up small spills/messes, and sanitizing yucky tables/changing tables/ect.
