Make these Easy DIY Garden Markers with the Kids!

Did you plant your pizza garden yet?  Or just have your Miracle-Gro Gro-ables seed pods™ ready to plant soon?

Learn from our mistake, and don’t wait until after planting to make your garden markers.  Now we have them made but aren’t sure which plants they belong to.  Ooops!

It’s okay, though… researching which plant is which once they’ve grown big enough to inspect is a good learning activity for the kids, right?!

Anyway, we made some super easy – and I think pretty cute – DIY Garden Markers for our Pizza Garden.  Patterned washi tape makes this garden craft easy enough for even toddlers and preschoolers to help with.  Here’s how to make some with your kids…

Easy DIY Garden Markers – Using Fun Washi Tape

Supplies:

  • washi tape in a variety of colors and patterns
  • jumbo wooden craft sticks
  • black permanent marker
  • clear varnish (option – if you would like them to last for more than one growing season)

Steps:

Wrap 2-3″ strips of washi tape around the top half of each craft stick – making stripes with different colored/patterned washi tape.

Use a permanent marker to write the plant name on the taped part of the craft stick.

Spray or apply clear varnish if you would like your DIY Garden Markers to last more than one growing season.

Stick wooden end of each garden marker into the potting mix near its matching plant.  That’s it!  I told you it was easy peasy.

Some additional tips:

  • Like I said above, make these DIY Garden Markers for each of the Miracle-Gro Gro-ables seed pods™ you plan to plant – before you plant them!
  • Prep for little ones by tearing 2-3″ strips of washi tape and sticking them to the edge of the table.  Or tear and hand them one tape strip at a time.
  • If you have older kids or want to be picky, make sure the tape ends all end on the same side of the craft stick.  Then write the plant name on the other side, so all of the messy-looking tape ends are on the back.  Make sense?

Using our DIY Garden Markers in Our Pizza Garden

As I mentioned above, we made our garden markers for our Pizza Garden.  So one for tomatoes, one for basil, one for red sweet peppers, and one for spinach. Did you see our Pizza Garden post?  Miracle-Gro Gro-ables seed pods™ made it so easy to plant.

My 4 year old, J.C., planted mostly by himself – pealing off the top of each seed pod and pushing them down into the loosened potting mix until the tops were even with the potting mix.

The best part:  Each seed pod has a non-GMO seed and plant food encased in growing materials and a biodegradable shell – so Miracle-Gro Gro-ables are guaranteed to grow with just daily watering.  No worries that the plants won’t sprout, so no worries about having disappointed kids!

If you give them a try, make sure to share your Gro-ables Project on social media with the hashtag #GroAblesProject so we can check it out!
