Make DIY Fall Dominos for Cool Math Games - B-Inspired Mama

This post was contributed by Kim of Life Over C’s.

I’m always looking for math games for kids, that are fresh and new to them. It seems like after they’ve played a game a couple of times they start getting bored with it, and it ends up in the back of a closet somewhere. And with three kids doing homeschooling, we need lots of fun math games (I mean, I have two preteens, so everything must be cool)… Which would mean lots of money, if I didn’t do some DIY games and activities to freshen things up from time to time.

When I was doing my shopping the other day, I saw a tub of fall-themed foam stickers at the store and a light bulb went on in my head…

A DIY Fall Dominoes Math Game!

There are endless ideas for kids math games using dominoes, for all ages. That means that all four of my girls can make use of the game, which makes my money spread further. I spent countless hours playing dominoes with my family as a child, and I love sharing those games with my kids. It’s like a family tradition to use games to learn. (It’s a huge plus that my kids don’t realize that is one of my goals when we’re playing!)

This DIY Dominoes Math Game was so easy to put together. My littlest one got a lot of fine-motor practice peeling the backing off the stickers while I put them on the paper.

I took several pieces of brown card stock and cut them into 4.25” and 2.75” rectangles to create the dominos. Then, I drew a line in the center of each card.

I decided to make two sets of dominoes because there were so many little stickers in the tub. Also, because my three-year-old isn’t really ready for counting because of her delays, but matching is a skill that we’re working on.

For one set, I used 5 different stickers and put one of each on the cards. That way my little one could focus on matching the pictures themselves instead of being distracted with counting the items on the cards.

For the second set, I made them more like traditional dominoes with numbers up to 5. If you have foam number stickers it might be fun to mix it up and do some with numbers and some with symbol stickers. These were for the older kids so that I can use them for math games along with just using them for plain ol’ dominoes.

More Ways to Play & Learn with your DIY Dominoes Math Game:

  • Add the two sides together to practice addition.
  • Create a subtraction problem with the domino.
  • Multiply the two sides together to practice multiplication facts.
  • Compare the sums, difference or products of two dominos and compare using greater than/less than.
  • Find two (or more) dominos that have the same sum.
  • Play traditional dominos, but add the sum for each domino as it is played to keep score.

This sounds really fun and creative, and it’s great that you can make it work for all ages. My son Is in preschool now and learning letters and numbers, so it might be fun for him to try something like this.
