Personally Curated Books and Apps for Kids!

I could spend HOURS in the children’s section of the library or books store. Pawing through the titles, admiring the illustrations, finding just the right fit for my child’s current interest and developmental needs. Sounds like a dream afternoon to me. But our library trips usually go more like this… Three kids run excitedly to the children’s area while I head for a book shelf. I’m quickly distracted when Priscilla for help getting set up on the computer. As I head back to the book shelf, I get sidetracked picking up the puzzle pieces that J.C. has scattered across the floor on his way to the train table. And when I’m done with that Sawyer starts in on a fit about wanting to go to the nonfiction book stacks that are inconveniently out of sight. Needless to say, that long afternoon of perfect book browsing does NOT happen for me often. We leave with books, but rarely the perfectly suited ones I was hoping for. But now I have a helper. A personal book and app shopper per say. Her name is… ZOOBEAN. And I am totally loving her! Let me tell you more…

Zoobean Does the Research for YOU!

While I love those library and book store afternoons, I just. don’t. have. time! Introducing Zoobean: a service that curates apps, books, and education resources specifically for your child. (Psst… You might remember seeing them on NBC’s Shark Tank back in April!) I’ve had the opportunity to try the Zoobean Expert service for my son, Sawyer, over the past month. And I seriously LOVE IT! Here’s how it works…

How Zoobean Works:

  • First, you create a profile for your child to let Zoobean in on his age, reading lever, interests, and even preferred book genres.
  • Then you get a dashboard – or SmartList – where your recommendations will be.
  • The best part: you get paired up with a personal expert to refine your child’s preferences and recommendations.

After you’re all set, you can start searching the HUGE database of curated books and apps based on over 1400 tags – such as recommended reading level, types of characters (animals or people?), gender of characters (male, female or transgender?), ethnicity, family type (adopted children? extended family? twins?), religion, emotional development (courage? frustration? self-confidence?), social development (bullying? sharing?), and life events (death and loss? new sibling?). As you find books that suit your child, you can add them to his SmartList dashboard for later reference (library trip!) or you can purchase right then through the link to Amazon or iTunes. Plus you also get access to unlimited literacy kits that have extension activities related to the books – perfect for summer learning I think! And you’ll get weekly book or app recommendations right on your child’s SmartList from your personal expert. (Whom you can also CONTACT at any time with special requests!)

How We’ve Used Zoobean

I especially love being able to search for books about specific emotional and social challenges that my kids need help with. And also being able to find books and apps to supplement our homeschool learning.

In just a couple minutes this morning, I was able to find an interactive eBook app related to our science unit called A to Sea. The kids LOVED it! And it integrated their science and literacy for more authentic learning. SCORE!

Want to Try Zoobean?

You can subscribe to Zoobean two ways: monthly for $2.99 per month or annually for $25.00; cheaper than ONE latte a month, mamas! BUT before you subscribe I have exciting new… Zoobean is offering all B-Inspired Mama readers a special discount. So do you have a hard time finding books and apps for kids? Would you ever try a service like Zoobean? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
