They are perfect for imaginative play, especially tangling up little sisters. We used Sawyer’s CitiBlocs
as units to measure and compare them. One snake is 12 blocks (or “units”) long, while the other is 13 blocks long. Now we’re measuring everything!
We painted little wooden snakes
, too. (They are just over 4 blocks long!) We found these cool jointed snakes when we went on a “Snake Hunt” at Hobby Lobby, but I’ve seen them at Micheal’s too.
Priscilla was FAR more interested in painting the paper the snake was on. So I gave her some snake stickers to add to her art while Sawyer worked on matching snake stickers and learning snake facts in his new Reptile Sticker Book
(also found at Hobby Lobby).
We tried to play a Snakes and Ladders Game
we found at the Dollar Tree, but Priscilla had other plans with the little plastic snakes we also got there. But Sawyer seemed really interested in it (despite the difficulties we had with the cheap paper board), so I think I might invest in a nicer version of this game (like maybe this jumbo version
) at some point. And make some time to play it with him while his sister’s napping!
FINALLY, the best part of the “snake experience” was our field trip to see REAL snakes at the pet store (Petco). But of course, I was so excited (or maybe a little nervous?) when the super-nice girl brought out the cute little corn snake for us to touch, that I forgot to get my camera out! Sawyer shied away, but Priscilla got her little fingers on it. Sawyer was FAR more interested in the fish and the mouse running on its wheel. It was so much fun, that we even went another day to check out the newer pet store, PetSmart, too. Both stores were super-accommodating and a great inexpensive day out!
Hope you find some ideas and inspiration from our adventures. I’m sure excited to have you all visiting us at B.Inspired Mama! Please don’t be afraid to let me know if there is any way I can make your visit better. (Like… are my photos taking too long to load? Or would you rather more step-by-step tutorials?) I’m still learning. Probably MORE than the kids most days!
BTW, I’m so excited to be linking to Tot School, We Play, Kids Get Crafty, Math Fun, Monkey Doodles, and Show & Tell!

What a cool topic! I've been wanting to make stocking snakes for some time using K's old stockings which I've saved. Now, I have no excuse since I can use them for a measuring activity! Thanks for the SSSSensational ideaSSSS!
