We as moms know that the jobs of a mother are endless. The role of mom goes far beyond the old fashioned motherhood stereotype. Motherhood encompasses more than just caregiving. A mother’s role is multifaceted and challenging.
The Many Jobs of a Mother
Whether a stay at home mom, work at home mom, or a mom who works outside the home, the average mother is responsible for a non-stop barrage of tasks that are too often taken for granted. And, we have to be “on the job” 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Here are just a few of the many jobs moms do:
14 Jobs of a Mother — That Go Beyond Childcare
1. Teacher
A mother is a child’s first educator. And, whether you’re homeschooling or send your kids to public school, the teaching never ends.
2. Housekeeper
Keeping our home in order is an endless job in itself, right moms? But, hopefully this responsibility doesn’t lie solely with mom. It isn’t the 1950s anymore. (Thank God!)
3. Nurse
As her child’s primary health care provider, every mama is expected to have an unlimited supply of band-aids, chicken noodle soup, and boo-boo kisses.
4. Journalist
Whether through baby books or Facebook, someone has to keep up with the memory keeping. Even if it gets harder to do the more kids you have.
5. Party Planner
Every mother is bound to plan a Birthday party or school holiday party or playdate or two… or twenty.
6. Hostess
And, mom is often the one hosting those parties and playdate, too, right?
7. Personal Shopper
Keeping growing kids clothed is a full-time job in itself, nevertheless weekly groceries and annual school supply lists.
8. Stylist
Well… only the moms who actually care that their kids’ clothes match. (I was rarely one of those moms.)
9. Spiritual Adviser
No matter which religion or spiritual path, a mother has the job of guiding and nurturing her children spiritually, too.
10. Psychiatrist
Mom may not understand the psychology behind her 2-year-old’s tantrums, but she sure tries! And, it’s just preparing her for her role as life coach in the tween and teen years.
11. Taxi Driver
Who drives the kids from school to music lessons to playdates and back again? Mom does!
12. Secretary
Endless phone calls made and received. Scheduling doctors appointments and keeping track of school events. All in a day’s work for a mother.
13. Photographer
I don’t know any mom who hasn’t become very familiar with her camera. And most moms love sharing their art: photos of their kids, of course.
14. Chef
Mom is often the one planning meals and cooking for the whole family.
It’s easy for us moms to list the many occupations our motherhood role includes, because we live it every day. But it’s backed by research, too. According to Pew Research Center, “when it comes to taking care of sick children, 55% of married or cohabiting parents say the mother does more than the father.” And, “Parents in households where both parents work full time report that mothers are doing more than fathers when it comes to managing their children’s schedules and activities. Some 54% say the mother does more in this area, while 6% say the father does and 39% say parents share this responsibility about equally.”
Despite the many jobs that moms do, we often don’t receive enough credit for their hard work and dedication. Society often simplifies the role of motherhood and undervalues the work that mothers do. But it’s important to recognize and appreciate the vital role mothers play in raising the next generation and contributing to society. So, let’s start sharing our appreciation for our moms right now!
