Need a Break, Mama? Keep the Kids Busy with Some Outdoor Activities!
Now that J.C. is getting bigger (he’s 2.5 years old), I’ve found a smidgen more time to myself. Well, “to myself” isn’t entirely “to myself,” but I’ve found that with the right activity, I can sometimes get a little stretch of time when they all play pretty nicely together. And I can sit back and enjoy some reading and a nice cool drink while keeping an eye on them. Here are some of those activities – outdoor activities – in case you need a little break this Summer…
10 Outdoor Activities for the Kids (While You Enjoy an Iced Coffee!)
(Be mindful, of course, that the kids are safe if playing with or around water.)
- Chalk Paint – Sidewalk chalk only holds my kids’ attention so long. But chalk paint works much better! Find out how to make some liquid chalk paint over at Sugar Aunts.
- Outdoor Sensory Play – My kids love exploring different textures with sensory play. It’s something that engages all of them (from ages 2 through 7) at the same time! Here are a few great ideas for outdoor sensory play from Sensory Activities for Kids.
- Sand & Water Table Play – My kids all love playing at their sand and water table. Here are 10 sand and water table ideas to keep the kids entertained.
- An Invitation to Play – Set up some random (or themed) materials for the kids to explore. Here’s a cool beach themed invitation to play from Creative Playhouse.
- Mud Pies – Give the kids some play dishes and utensils so they can make “real” mud pies! (Shaving cream makes fun whipped cream, too!)
- Water Wall – Water walls are a safe way for the kids to play with water somewhat independently. Here’s how to make a pool noodle water wall that’s sure to keep them busy all Summer!
- Outdoor Obstacle Course – It will take just a bit to set up at first, but once you’ve made the obstacle course, sit back and watch the kids have fun.
- Bubbles – Blowing bubbles is another activity that seems to fascinate kids of all ages. Make up a big batch of bubble solution and let them free play with bubbles or have them try this fun bubble swatting activity to make it even more fun!
- Giant Bubble Bath – A small kiddie pool is always a hit with my kids. But Life with Moore babies suggests adding bubbles to make it even more fun.
- Car & Truck Wash – Give the kids some buckets of sudsy water and sponges, and let them clean their toy trucks and cars or even their bikes!
Enjoy an Iced Coffee While You Watch The Kids Play!
When I get moments like this – where the kids are playing nicely together – I pull up a lawn chair and catch up on Facebook or read some articles. And my new addition to those moments is an International Delight Iced Coffee. It gives me the little caffeine boost I so desperately need and tastes yummy and refreshing, too. Plus it’s already made (no brewing needed!) and ready to grab so I don’t waste any precious moment of happy kids play!
