Girl Scouts Offers FREE Healthy Habits Booklets!

The prevalence of screens and media and long days in classroom settings in our society today make it especially challenging to keep our kids active and healthy.  So when I was asked to share the Girl Scouts’ new Together Counts initiative and Healthy Habits Journey Program and Booklets, I was more than willing.  To help us with this challenge of keeping our kids – particularly our girls – healthy, the Girl Scouts have partnered with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation to develop three Healthy Habits Booklets for their Girl Scout volunteers to use in guiding their Daisies, Brownies, and Junior Girl Scouts.  But they are also offering these awesome resources for FREE to you and me!  And so far, I am super impressed with them.  Let me tell you more…

Encourage Energy Balance with Healthy Habits

The Healthy Habits Booklets are packed with information, helpful tips, and lots of fun activities to guide girls in fun, easy ways to achieve “energy balance.”

What is Energy Balance?

Energy In: the calories you get from eating and drinking.

Energy Out: the calories you burn from physical activities.

Our girls are subjected to so much superficial imagery and messaging regarding their bodies and their health in our society.  I love that these booklets encourage healthy habits – like healthy eating and physical activity – in a way that is supportive, balanced, and smart.  The information and activities focus on exploring science and energy in/out in the world around them and NOT on restricting themselves, dieting or their body size.

Download the FREE Healthy Habits Booklets Here!

The three Healthy Habits Booklets include:

  • Between Earth and Sky with Healthy Habits
  • WOW! Wonders of Water with Healthy Habits
  • Get Moving! with Healthy Habits

I will definitely be referring to these booklets when we do our health and human anatomy studies in our homeschooling!

Want to Learn More About the Girl Scouts?

I remember my days as a Brownie fondly: forming friendships, making crafts, helping in the community, going to camp.  Girl Scouting is a perfect activity for girls to builds “confidence, courage and character.”  But did you know that health and fitness have been part of Girl Scouting, too, since girls ran foot races in 1912?!  You can find out more by following the Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital and Together Counts Twitter Party (with hashtag #gno and #healthyhabits) on September 9th, 2014, at 9PM EST.   And follow all of the Together Counts  and Girls Scouts healthy fun through social media:

My daughter was in Girl Scouts- she started in kindergarten and continued through her senior year. She had amazing experiences, met terrific people, and gained incredible skills. She earned money selling cookies that she was able to put towards a trip to Ireland, where she and other Girl Scouts from around the country learned about and explored the country and culture, as well as engaged in a variety of outdoor recreational activities. She and and her troop also spent a few years planning, working and fundraising to finance a trip to Europe, where they had an amazing time In London and Paris. I will forever be grateful to Girl Scouts for the opportunities and experiences my daughter was able to have as she grew up a Girl Scout!
