Learning About Nutrition Labels for Kids

Honestly… I think I was 25 before I knew how to properly read a nutrition label.  Heck, I’m not even sure I know how to now.  They’re so complicated.  So many numbers.  And those percentages.  What?!  I barely understand those.  So while I’ve tried to teach my kids about good nutrition through fun activities, books, a food taste test, and healthy kids in the kitchen recipes, I haven’t even attempted to teach them how to read food labels yet.  But I don’t want them to go to the age of 25, like I did, naive to the nutrition that they’re putting into their bodies.  So when I discovered the new initiative for putting the Facts Up Front, with easier to read nutrition labels for kids (and everyone!) right on the front of food packaging, I was in love.  Check it out…

Facts Up Front Makes Nutrition Labels for Kids EASIER!

The new Facts Up Front label displays what I consider the most important nutrition information right on the front of the food packaging.  It shows calories per serving and information on three nutrients to limit in your and your kids’ diet: saturated fat, sodium and sugar.

It’s boxes with big numbers are MUCH easier to find and read than the traditional nutrition label.  And I was impressed to see many of our favorite brands participating in the program.

Fun Ways to Teach Kids About Nutrition with Facts Up Front

I’m really excited that these new easier to read nutrition labels will make it easier to get my kids involved in their nutrition.  Here are some ways you can use Facts Up Front with the kids…

  • Use the Personalized Nutrition Calculator – Help the kids use the Nutrition Calculator at FactsUpFront.org to learn what their unique nutrition needs are.
  • Go On A Facts Up Front Scavenger Hunt – After showing the kids the Facts Up Front label example above, have them help spot foods with the Facts Up Front label while grocery shopping.  Make it a fun game!
  • Which Number is Less? – Practice practical math skills by having the kids compare calorie counts or total sugar in two like products (as in the two loaves of bread pictured below).
  • Let the Kids Make Choices – After they have an understand of the labels, let the kids compare like products and choose for themselves which to buy!

More About Facts Up Front

Facts Up Front is a voluntary initiative led by the Grocery Manufacturers Association, representing the nation’s leading food and beverage companies, and the Food Marketing Institute, representing more than 1,500 food wholesalers and retailers.  So far, over 50 manufacturers are voluntarily using Facts Up Front, and we are surely going to see more Facts Up Front labeling in the future.

Do you teach your kids about nutrition?  What do you think about these new and easier nutrition labels for kids? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
