Fun Easter Traditions for Families!

I love holidays.  Because I love building memories for my kids with holiday traditions.  Over the past year, the B-Inspired Bloggers have shared their fun family traditions for Halloween, Thanksgiving,Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day.  Let’s see what these creative mamas have up their sleeves for family Easter traditions!

14 Family Easter Traditions - From the Mouths of Moms - at B-Inspired Mama

14 Fun Easter Traditions – From the Mouths of Moms

1. A Family Easter Egg Hunt
“My wonderful in-laws host a huge Easter egg hunt for all their grandchildren every year. It’s the highlight of spring!” Erin of The Usual Mayhem

2. Visit A Farm
“We do the egg hunt outside if weather allows, or inside. He loves it! We also try to go to a farm around Easter, he loves animals.” Deirdre of JDaniel4′s Mom

3. Grow Magic Jelly Beans
“We grow ‘magic’ jelly beans. Each Easter Saturday, the Easter Bunny leaves some magic jelly beans for us to plant in the garden. We dig a hole, put in the jelly beans, water them, and wait. The next morning, a giant lolly pop has grown in their place.” Ness of One Perfect Day

4. A Bunny Photo Scrapbook
“I’m a total sucker for cheesy, classic traditions to do with kids.  Ever since my first child was old enough (he was only a couple weeks old for his first Easter), we’ve been going to the mall to sit with the Easter Bunny and get a picture taken.  After just a couple of years, I realized I would be collecting quite a few ‘pictures with the Easter Bunny.’  At first I would put the photos out around Easter in frames, but then I came up with a better plan!  I started a scrapbook just for those photos.” Laura of Play Dr. Mom

5. A Big Easter Brunch
“We always have a huge Easter brunch to try to gobble up some of those eggs and ward off the massive chocolate intake!” Erika of Prey Species

6. A Chocolate Scavenger Hunt
“Around here Easter is about a chocolate scavenger hunt at home and at my in-laws house. Here the Easter bunny leaves clues for the girls to find their one ‘big’ chocolate bunny. At my in laws they set up a huge, customized to each child scavenger hunt. Filled with clues, chocolate and toys. We follow the hunt up with a delicious Easter early dinner. It really is a lovely tradition.” Jen of Kitchen Counter Chronicles

7. The Easter Story in Eggs
“[There] is a fun tradition we have been doing for a few years now.  It reminds me a little of a Christmas advent, but for Easter.  You get 12 plastic Easter eggs and number them 1-12.  Inside each egg, write/type out the scripture listed here on small strips of paper and put the small item inside the egg.  You can take turns opening them and reading the scripture, showing the prop.  The final one is empty, representing the empty tomb.” Karyn of Teach Beside Me

8. Family Egg Dyeing
“The kids wake up to Easter Baskets with a special gift and filled eggs that the Easter bunny has left. Then they peek outside and discover that he has also left empty eggs all over the yard and go on an egg hunt. We follow up with a yummy brunch and egg dying event with all of our family. Easter is not complete without a trip to the mall to take a picture with our friends with the Easter Bunny too!” Kim of The Educators’ Spin On It

9. Grow Easter Grass
“I hate unnecessary plastic and I feel like Easter ‘grass’ is the epitome of unnecessary plastic. It’s not pretty, lacks any kind of real purpose, is not recyclable and it gets tracked all over your house before getting dumped in the trashcan. Last year, we started a tradition of growing our own Easter grass and I love it!” Carissa of Creative Green Living

10. Non-Candy Easter Basket Treats
“We try to come up with non-candy presents for baskets. Things like stickers, chalk, craft supplies and books and cheddar bunny carrots are favorites.” Carissa of Creative Green Living

11. A Coconut Bunny Cake
“It’s an Easter tradition at our house to have a bunny cake for Easter–one that was passed down from my grandparents.” Sara of Mom Endeavors

12. An Easter Tree
“Goblin’s Nanny, my mother-in-law, always has an Easter tree with painted eggs. I like going over there at Easter because its become part of our tradition seeing it.” The Monko of Taming the Goblin

13. Easter Arts & Crafts
“We make a lot of arts and crafts to hang around the house and share with friends as cards. [We also] make some easter cookies for school friends and attend the annual egg hunt organised by our city.” Roopa of Putti’s World

14. A Kid Decorate Bunny Cake
“We started some Easter traditions last year, our favorite being a kid-decorated Easter Bunny Cake (inspired by Think Magnet).  I bake the giant cake and ice it, then let the kids at it with tons of coconut and Easter candy.  It turns pretty crazy, but it’s so much fun!  I hope the kids remember it fondly when they’re all grown up.” Krissy of B-Inspired Mama

We use Resurrection Eggs to go through the Easter story with our kids. Similar to your number 7, but we purchased a kit ready to go from FamilyLife and re-use it every year. Love it!

My favorite Easter of all time was the year my mom bought seven chocolate Easter Bunnies (Yes, there were seven of us kids) and then accidentally left them in the car. They totally melted. But she couldn’t afford to buy another set. So she put them in the Easter baskets anyway. Imagine the laughter as we each found a chocolate puddle with floating eyes and a stray ribbon. I can still picture those melted bunnies.

And I love the story even more now that I’m a mom. 🙂

I share in my most recent blog post my personal story of my father using the vinegar smell, when we colored Easter Eggs fifty years ago, as a teaching moment.

I remember another tradition in our home in the 60’s, when there were no home videos. A major television network always broadcast “The Ten Commandments” at Passover and “Ben Hur” at Easter. When we were little, getting to stay up late enough to watch “The Parting of the Red Sea” was a tradition.

It was not hard for me to know what my father valued. Those values have lasted a lifetime, even during those years when I did not identify with the religion of my childhood home. The things I learned have helped me as I traveled the world, and met people of all faiths.

I am so encouraged as I hop from blog to blog, seeing so many beautiful and life-celebrating colors and crafts being shared by such thoughtful and helpful bloggers. Thanks so much for this excellent round-up!

Oh those are such special memories. Thanks for sharing! It helps us to remember just why we do all of this for our children!

When my kids were small, I would buy them new Spring/Summer clothes and toys, wrap them to hide in strange places (clothes dryer, fridge, trunk of my car). Rhyming notes were placed in eggs in their baskets, with hints on where to find their Easter treats. I photographed them finding their gifts. We also had an Easter tree: I spray painted dry tree branches, put them in plaster in clay pot, added grass, and the kids added decorations (kid-made and bought).

Oh my gosh – I love that idea for the clues to find their gifts. I bet they remember that fondly!
