On-The-Go Sensory Play with a Transportation I Spy Jar!

We’ve been having a lot of fun lately with our Gross-Motor Transportation Game for Preschoolers. My 4 year old absolutely loves all forms of transportation.  She loves playing with cars and trucks as much as she likes going places in them! We spend hours on the road traveling each week, and this transportation-themed I Spy jar was a perfect way to catch her attention while we were in the truck.  Here’s how we made it…

Materials:

  • small plastic storage jar (I found mine for $1.00 at A.C. Moore Craft Store.)
  • Rice
  • transportation themed buttons
  • pony beads
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks (optional)

How to assemble:

Alternate layers of rice, buttons and beads in the jar leaving 1-2 inches of space at the top of the jar so that the items can move around freely inside the jar after it is sealed. It may help to place some of the buttons near the outside of the jar to make sure that they don’t get buried inside the rice.

If you are using this with a child who make open it, you might want to put some hot glue around the seal to make it more difficult. My daughter wasn’t tempted to try, so I did not do that step, but I have done it with other projects.

You may notice from the pictures that I actually used a multi-grain mix instead of plain, white rice. This isn’t necessary, but it did add some extra visual stimulation to the I Spy jar.

Altogether with gathering the items, the jar took less than 5 minutes to make! One thing that I really like about making I Spy jars this way is that I can easily remove the items after they have lost their magic and I can use them in other activities. This is the second time that I’ve used this jar and it’s still popular! I’m excited about finding more new ways to use the jar and buttons!
