A Winter Themed Homemade Playdough Gift

I was asked to visit Priscilla’s Pre-K class today to tell them about my career.  (Hi, Mrs. Olin’s Pre-K Class!)  And since my job here at B-Inspired Mama is all about sharing creative ideas for mamas and their kids, I thought I’d plan something creative to do with them, too.  And what’s better to do with Preschoolers than play with some playdough?!  So I set to work making some winter-themed homemade playdough.  Here’s what I came up with…

Sparkle Snow Homemade Playdough Recipe

I used the same playdough recipe that I used for my Transformers Inspired Homemade Playdough, but didn’t add any food coloring and used white glitter to add the sparkle.   I’m a homemade playdough convert now!  Here’s the recipe…

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 Tablespoons glitter
  • 1 – 2 cups boiling water
  • a couple drops of essential oils for adding scent (optional)

Steps:

(This time I used my stand mixer with the dough hook, and it was so easy!  But you can use a good old bowl and wooden spoon, too!)

  1. Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, glitter, vegetable oil, and a couple drops of your essential oils in a large bowl.
  2. Slowly add boiling water and mix until it makes a somewhat sticky dough.
  3. Knead, knead, knead.  It should get less sticky, but if you need to you can knead in a bit more flour.

Filling Containers of Sparkle Snow Homemade Playdough Gift at B-Inspired Mama

I plan to take lots of holiday cookie cutters in to let the kids play with the playdough with me, but I also packaged some playdough up for each child to take home, too.  I just put a handful of playdough and a sprinkle of plastic snowflake confetti into each 8 oz. plastic container.

This little homemade playdough gift would be the perfect size for a stocking stuffer, too!  And you could change it up with different colored playdough and confetti or small toys.

So do you think they’ll like their little homemade playdough gifts?  I hope so!  Have you made homemade playdough yet?  If so, I’d love to hear about your recipe in the comments below!

This came out great – thanks Krissy! I made two batches in different colors and put them in cute animal containers (that I found in the clearance section) and put them in my daughter’s goodie bags for her birthday party. I couldn’t find those nice snowflakes, but I found stars and hearts at Michael’s. Great end product that was fun to make!

I love this gift idea -play dough make such a wonderful gift (in my opinion) when paired with fun accessories! I especially like that mitten cookie cutter -cute! I just spent an entire hour today making play dough for gifts -it felt VERY long, but the resulting gift packs are satisfyingly complete and looking marvellous!

    Hello,
I’m a dutch mother and art teacher. I have always had a lot of fun crafting with home made playdough (and baking it in the oven, afterwards painting it). On Pinterest I saw your recipe, and I noticed that you use an extra ingredient: ‘cream of tartar’. Now I’m wondering what that is. What do you usually use it for? Is t powder, or fluid? I’m wondering what it is called in dutch, but ‘google translate’ can’t help me with it, can you?
PS: really love your crafty ideas!

Cream of tartar is a powder that you can find in the baking section of your store. It is mostly used for making meringues/meringue pies or it can also be used for cleaning. I have read on many other sites and other recipes for Play-doh that use lemon juice instead of the cream of tartar (as it is pretty expensive &/or sometimes you just want to make Play-doh and don’t have it on hand) Oh & p.s. I have never used a squirt of dish soap in my Play-doh!

Thanks for answering this, Lisa! I’m a newbie playdough-maker. 😉 And I add the dish soap as an alternative to glycerin (a main ingredient to dishsoap), which I don’t obviously have on had but gives the playdough just a bit more shine and smoothness. I know it can go without, though. 🙂

Oh, I have used glycerin before, but hadn’t realized that it was one of the main ingredients in dish soap. That makes sense now. Also as an update I made this playdough recipe using the vinegar instead of cream of tartar finally last night and it turned out great. Just in case anyone had read that and was wondering . I also added white non-toxic tempra & made this a bright white! Fun stuff! Love, love, love your blog by the way!!!!!

Oh – good idea to add the paint – I hadn’t even thought of that!

P.s. (sorry for so many posts) but I was wondering where you got your snowflake confetti/table scatter from. It is SO cute! Thanks in advance. 😉

Hi Lisa! I found it at Walmart in their holiday crafts section. 🙂

Ok, correction of my lemon juice comment. I looked back & three recipes I have call for vinegar as the replacement for the cream of tartar. The following is a quote from one of the sites I follow- “I ran out of cream of tartar after 1 tablespoon, so I had to use vinegar to make up the difference.  Just double the tablespoons when using vinegar (1 tablespoon cream of tartar= 2 tablespoons vinegar).  If you use vinegar, just make sure to add a little extra flour (like 1/4 to 1/3 cup) so that it will still be the right consistency.  And don’t worry about your playdough smelling like vinegar…as it cooks, the smell goes away.” I have not personally tried this yet but I sure hope it works because I’m going to try it this week when I make my white “snow Play-doh” Good luck to you!
