How Potty Training Has Changed for Me…
Isn’t it funny how things change when you have more than one child? How our parenting style changes and develops with each child? Not only is each successive child unique and requires different parenting techniques, but we – as moms – change along the way, too. When I was invited by Pull-Ups® to share a bit about my potty training journey with my 3 year old (and youngest of three), I got to thinking about how this potty training journey is so different from when I potty trained my other two kids.
Potty Training – The First Child vs. The Third Child
Child #1 – I was sure that the first time my very young toddler even acknowledged the toilet, that it was a sign of readiness and time to start full-blown potty training.
Child #3 – My preschooler has started telling me after he goes in his diaper, sometimes asks to potty before baths, seems interested in his big brother’s underpants. He seems more than ready. But am I ready?! I’m not sure…
Child #1 – I buy every potty book and video I can find and make my toddler’s life revolve around pottying.
Child #3 – I dig and dig for those darn potty books and videos we used to have, but only find one. It will have to do. I read it a couple of times, but the kids and I both get sick of it pretty quick.
Child #1 – I read Amazon reviews to decide on the best little kiddy potty before purchasing TWO. One for next to the big toilet and the other for in front of the tv during potty video watching.
Child #3 – My preschooler jumps on the toilet, feet dangling. I think about getting him a step stool to prop his feet, but he seems to manage without it.
Child #1 – I sit on the bathroom floor eagerly cheering on my toddler EVERY half hour when the potty timer goes off. He picks a surprise from the surprise box whether he’s “successful” or not.
Child #3 – I make sure my preschooler is all set then head back to the dinner-making while he does his duty. I give him a high five when he’s done. If he’s lucky, I remember to give him a sticker for the sheet of plain computer paper I tacked up on the bathroom door.
Just Like You and Your Kids Are Unique, So is Potty Training.
Because there are so many different kids, and different mamas, there are many ways to parent. And many ways to potty train. It doesn’t mean one is right or wrong. It just depends on your kids. And you. And the circumstances you are in at the time. One thing that was consistent for us while potty training all three kids, was using Pull-Ups® Training Pants to get us through. Using Pull-Ups® Training Pants at the start of each potty training process, allowed us to have the protection from messes while giving my little ones more independence. Because of the stretchy sides, they could easily pull their Pull-Ups® up and down when they needed to, and they felt like they were wearing big-boy or big-girl underpants instead of “baby diapers”.
