Make Some Halloween Cupcakes with the Kids!
Halloween is fast approaching and we are busy working on costumes and decorating the house. With Halloween, comes parties. The perfect treat to bring to any kids’ party is cupcakes. So, it seems that it’s time to create some spooktacular Halloween cupcakes. We decided to bake up some scary cupcakes and some not so scary cupcakes. These Halloween cupcakes are simple to decorate and fun for kids of all ages to get involved.
First, we baked up a batch of our favorite vanilla cupcakes. We love Joy of Baking’s vanilla cupcake recipe, but feel free to grab a box off the grocery store shelf…the kids will never know the difference. Once the cupcakes have cooled – it’s time for some Halloween cupcake decorating fun.
Pumpkin Halloween Cupcakes
What You’ll Need:
- vanilla cupcakes
- vanilla frosting
- orange sugar sprinkles
- orange food coloring
- green gummy bears
For our pumpkin Halloween cupcakes, we coated the top of our cooled cupcakes with store bought vanilla frosting. Once the cupcake was coated, my youngest daughter rolled the cupcake through some orange decorative sugar. We then cut a small slit in the top of the cupcake and pushed in a green sour gummy bear. The bear is the stalk of the pumpkin. I added a little orange coloring to 1/4 cup of frosting and piped the lines on the pumpkins. Done. A simple and festive pumpkin cupcake. These would make a great treat for the Thanksgiving dessert table as well.
Scary Haunted House Halloween Cupcakes
What You’ll Need:
- vanilla cupcakes
- vanilla frosting
- black sugar sprinkles
- black, yellow and green construction paper
- toothpicks
Again, we coated our cooled cupcakes with store bought vanilla frosting. My daughter then rolled each side of the cupcake in black decorative sugar…this creates the spooky hill that the haunted house rests on. My daughter drew a cat and haunted house on black construction paper. I cut them out and taped toothpicks to the back of each. We then simply pushed the house and cat into place. You could add a floating ghost, a bat or an owl…just cut them out of construction paper and poke them in place.
These Halloween cupcakes brought a smile to everyone’s faces and were delicious to eat. It was great fun to hang out creating holiday treats in the kitchen with my kids.

I ADORE how Jen’s daughter made her own Halloween cupcake picks instead of using store bought ones. How creative and fun! Thanks again for the inspiration, Jen!
