Handmade Halloween Costumes [Milk Truck and Cow]

Super Cute Handmade Halloween Costumes

When I was a kids, my parents could never afford to buy us expensive Halloween costumes from the store.  We were forced to be creative when coming up with a fun costume.  I would get frustrated when I was young, but I look back and really appreciate it now.  Which is why I’m trying to make handmade Halloween costumes a tradition for my kids.  (Scroll on down to see lots of other’s handmade halloween constume inspiration, too!)

When my oldest son was nearly 3 years old, he was adamant that he wanted to be a truck for Halloween.  But not just any truck; a milk tanker truck.  So I thought his little sister (just under a year old) would make the cutest cow companion.  Here they are…

Handmade Halloween Costume – Milk Truck

What you’ll need:

  • 3 cardboard boxes
  • hot glue
  • utility knife
  • green and white foam sheets
  • large plastic recycled snack canister
  • paper towel tube
  • tin foil
  • white and black electrical tape
  • printed paper wheels
  • battery operated push lights

What you’ll do:

  1. Hot glue the boxes together to make a basic truck shape.
  2. Cut out body and arm openings from the main box using a utility knife.
  3. Use hot glue to cover the truck body boxes with the foam sheets.
  4. Cover the plastic bin and paper towel roll with tin foil.
  5. Glue the bin onto the back of the truck to make the tanker.
  6. Glue the paper towel roll to the truck to make the smokestack.
  7. Print out wheels onto card stock, cut out, and attach to the truck.
  8. Add electrical tape to the cut cardboard edges and for accents along the truck.
  9. Attach the lights to the front for the headlights.

Handmade Halloween Costume – Cow

What you’ll need:

  • black leggings
  • black long sleeved shirt
  • black fabric headband
  • white, pink, and black felt
  • needle and thread
  • stuffing

What you’ll do:

  1. Cut out random shapes from the white felt and applique them onto the black shirt.
  2. Cut out a large circle from the pink felt.  Cut four small triangles out of the edge of the circle.  Sew the edges of the triangle shaped cuts in the circle together.  This will make the udder three-dimensional.
  3. Cut 8 finger shapes from the pink felt.  Sew each pair together to make 4 teets for the udder.  Turn them inside out, stuff them with stuffing, and sew them onto the main pink circle udder.
  4. Sew the edges of the pink circle udder to the center of the black shirt, stuffing it with stuffing before sewing completely around it.
  5. Cut ear shapes out of the black felt.  Cut inner ear shapes out of the pink felt and applique them onto the black ears.
  6. Sew the ears onto the black headband.

Right now while they are young, I do most of the work, but I’m excited to get them more involved as they grow up.  Do you make or buy your kids’ Halloween costumes?  What are your kids going to be this year for Halloween?
