20 Kids Birthday Traditions [From the Mouths of Moms]
- Write a Letter a Year – “From this year I have started to write my daughter letters the idea is that I can give them all to her when she is 18. I think it will be nice and funny for her to look back on.” Amy of Inspire Imagination Through Creation
- Serve a Special Breakfast – “I love to start the day with a special breakfast. Here is the one I served this year [for JDaniel’s Golden Birthday.]” Deirdre of JDaniel4’s Mom
- Let the Birthday Person Choose Dinner – “At our house, the birthday person always chooses what we have for dinner – anything they want!” Tonya of The Crafty Mummy
- Use a Special Birthday Plate – “We have an ‘I am Special’ plate that I painted/glazed. We put it out for any special day. The kids especially love eating on the plate.” Becky of This Reading Mama
- Let the Birthday Person Pick the Cake – “The kids always get to pick a special cake that I find a way to make…this firetruck [cake] was one of my favorites.” Carla of Preschool Powol Packets
- Make a Time Capsule – “For their first birthday, I make a time capsule with mementos and notes from loved ones.” Leanna of All Done Monkey
- How About Some Happy Birthday PLAY? – “Since my twins’ birthdays are so close to Christmas, so far we have spent their actual birthdays at home quietly celebrating with family. We did lots of fun birthday play activities this year.” Stephanie of Twodaloo
- Get Out the Birthday Toys – “We have many ways to “play” that relate to birthdays. We have a doll baby that we use to play mommy, the Melissa and Doug Birthday cake set, a Minnie Mouse Bow-tique Birthday set and play dough that we usually use toothpicks with [for candles].” Laura of Lalymom
- Have a Special Birthday Bath – “We just started this last year but a birthday themed bath is a lot of fun for the kids too.” Jaime of Frogs and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails
- Have a Kid-Chosen Theme – “In our family, birthdays are all about being together with family and eating a homemade cake that I’ve decorated to a theme they’ve requested. My mother always made us special cakes when we were growing up and I love being able to carry on that tradition, even though mine aren’t nearly as good!” Chrissy of The Outlaw Mom
- Do A Birthday Service Project – “We have recently started making serving others a focus of our birthdays and have LOVED every moment of our birthday celebrations. Most recently, my husband completed 42 Acts of Service for his 42nd Birthday! Best day EVER!” Sheila of Pennies of Time
- Request Donations Instead of Gifts – “In a community where children’s birthday celebrations cost from hundreds to thousands of dollars, we decided as a family to do a Secret ‘Service’ Agent Birthday party with the boys this year. The boys said, ‘No presents, just bring supplies for our service projects.’ 14 families joined our family in a service project for a hospital, making cards for the elderly, and then visiting residents in a nursing home. It was the first time we had gathered so many little hands to do service, and it worked! The boys have great memories of that birthday party.” Sheila of Pennies of Time
- Gift a Special Book Each Year – “[I buy] a special ‘birthday book’ each year. I typically try to find a book that relates to one of their current interests (and the birthday party theme). I try to buy good quality books that they will want to keep even after childhood to share with their own kids. Then during our birthday festivities everyone signs the inside of the book and shares a special memory from the year. I love it! And now that the girls are getting older they also love to read through all of the special messages.” Shaunna of Fantastic Fun and Learning
- Make a Birthday Poster – “We made a huge poster with some milestones and tidbits about our son that I’d love to continue doing from year to year. For his first birthday we included his height, weight, number of teeth, and some of his favorite activities.” Krissy of KZ and Me
- Do a Birthday Interview – “We do a yearly [Birthday] interview with our kids. We started it with my oldest 2 years ago. Little brother is not really able to interview yet but I did write out a list to save of his favorites right now. Next year he will get to be interviewed.” Jaime of Frogs and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails
- Add to Their Birthday Book Each Year – “I have created a ‘birthday book’ for each of my boys, that I update every year. It is a verbal snapshot of them and their world that we always enjoy looking back on.” Leanna of All Done Monkey
- Honor Their Birth Parents – “My children are both adopted, so on their birthday we of course can’t help but think of their birth parents. To honor their birth parents, the evening before their birthday we light a special candle together in honor of their birth parents. We also give our children the opportunity to make a wish for or send good thoughts to their birth parents by whispering into the candle smoke.” Katie of Gift of Curiosity
- Tell Them Their Birth Story – “Choose their special meal, choose their cake, tell the bedtime story of how they were born….” MaryAnn F. Kohl, Author
- Look At Their Birth Pictures – “I try to sit down with my kids on their Birthdays and show them the photos of when they were born while telling them about their special birth day. They love seeing themselves as tiny babies!” Krissy of B-Inspired Mama
- Surprise Them with Friends & Family – “My three year old still naps. We invited friends over to be here when she woke up from her nap….it was so precious to see the other kids so excited to yell surprise and to see my daughter’s reaction. Wish it could be an annual tradition, too bad naps have to disappear!” Laura of Lalymom

all babies are special but our baby was a miracle. we had been married 17 years before our blessing arrived! no birth control. so when God went me to the right doctors we finally had our blessing. A boy! I was thankful for every day of his life so I counted how many days old he was before school started i could tell you within a day or two how many days old he was. On his homemade birthday cakes I would incorporate that number some where on his birthday cake! He was born in January one year the weather was so awful we had to postpone his birthday until June. the day we planned he would be 909 days old so we did that as a theme for the invitations. he was into trains so everything was train related. the invitations read like a train ticket arrival time, departure time. the train number was 909. he will be 20 this year and I still put the number of days old on his cake.
