An Easy Kids Craft for Exploring The Five Senses with Kids
As a part of our All About Me unit, we have been focusing on each one of the five senses and learning to become fully aware of the world around us. For a fun way to focus on our sense of hearing, the we did this beautiful wind chime kids craft!
A Colorful Wind Chime Kids Craft to Explore Hearing
Supplies:
- 5 (or more) Wooden Peg Clothes Pins
- Tempera Paint
- Paint Brush
- Canning Ring
- Fishing Line
- Hot Glue
Steps:
Set children up at a kids craft table with clothespins and paint. With young children, offering one clothespin and one color of paint at a time may work best.
Allow pegs to dry and then attach to canning ring with fishing line. Secure ends of each string to peg and ring with hot glue. Hang and enjoy hearing the sounds when the wind blows!
Using a Wind Chime Kids Craft to Explore the Sense of Hearing
Talk with your child about beautiful sights and sounds of their wind chime swaying in the breeze. Is the pitch high or low, loud or quiet. Does it sway fast or slowly? What would it sound like if the pegs were metal or plastic? Go on a sound hunt around your house or neighborhood, testing the sound of different materials!
Jessica, writer and creator of Play Learn Love, has a passion for all things messy, fun, and creative! As a former early childhood education teacher, she understands the importance of learning through play. Now a stay at home mom, she runs a small, part time preschool program out of her home and shares their daily adventures on her blog. Whether it be learning with legos or exploring through messy play, they are always finding creative hands on ways to learn!
As a former art teacher, I just love seeing kids craft or art activities used to solidify and enhance early learning. And it’s so cool that this wind chime will then encourage further exploration of the sense of hearing for long after the craft is done! Thanks for the great idea, Jessica!

Love it. Pinned. We’re exploring all five senses each week through our Letter of the Week Tot School. This is a great one for when we (finally) get to W!
