Oil Water Color Science Explosions

Oil Water Science Fun

Oil & Water Science Fun at B-InspiredMama.com

Here’s some easy science fun with things you probably already have in your kitchen; water, vegetable oil, and food coloring.  We poured some oil into a pitcher or vase half full of room temperature water.  The kids learned that oil & water “don’t like each other.”  I told them that the oil rises to the top because the water is denser than oil.

Then we put a couple drops of food coloring in and notice how it beaded up in the oil.  After a few seconds it exploded beyond the oil down into the water because it is made with water and is therefore also denser than oil.

We threw in a little color theory, too, by using two primary colors and watching them mix in the oil & water.  The kids were in awe and asked to do this experiment over and over again.  Next time, I want to set it up with some eye droppers so that they can do it themselves.

Have your kids ever experimented with oil & water?
