Huh? Early Learning with Pistachios?!
I know – seems weird, right? But that seems to be the direction our homeschooling is taking. Finding the learning opportunities in EVERYTHING. I mean, don’t get me wrong. We do still use some curriculum and frequent the library. But we also just talk about and learn from everything around us. Including our pistachio snack. I was sent an assortment of seasoned pistachios from The Pistachio Health Institute to try as a healthy snack with the kids. So I used the healthy snack time for a little pistachio-inspired early learning, too. Check it out…
Early Learning Fun with Pistachios
I set up the pistachios on a tray with a three-bowl server, an ice cream scoop, and a measuring spoon and let the kids at it. I expected them to go at them with the scoops first. But honestly, they were far more interested in touching them, removing the shells, and eating them. They had never seen pistachios before. So I sat with them and explained that a pistachio is actually a seed with a hard shell that grows on a tree. They proceeded to pretend that they were birds, chipmunks, and other creatures opening and eating their yummy seeds.
I did get them to take a break in their snacking long enough to do a little math early learning. We lined them up and counted them. Then the kids made estimates of how many Pistachios might fit in the scoop and the spoon. We counted as we filled the scoop and spoon and discovered that the spoon held 1/3 of the Pistachios that the scoop held. Who knew you could do math with Pistachios?!
Finally we talked about how the Pistachios are a MUCH healthier snack than their typical favorites (granola bars, crackers, etc.), because they’re natural and full of healthy fiber which helps to keep their bellies feeling full longer.

I love pistachios-especially in ice-cream, but I’m not sure that counts. Thanks for the ideas.
