Did you take the kids to see SING when it was out in theaters? My daughter made sure we didn’t miss it. It was so fun! I mean, imagine your favorite singing and dancing competition show, but with adorable and seriously hilarious singing and dancing animals. I had a hard time keeping my daughter from dancing in the aisles of the movie theater.
But now, she can sing and dance along at home! As of March 21st, Universal’s SING is available on Blu-ray & Digital HD!
More good news: Scholastic and Universal have partnered to celebrate the DVD release of SING with a Dream! Make! Create! – a site full of SING-inspired fun. It’s full of fun ways to connect with the kids – from great articles like How to Throw the Ultimate Rock Star Party, fun quizzes like What Kind of Star is Your Child Destined to Be?, and even creative tutorial videos for Microphone Cake Pops and a Costume Storage Crate.
And we were thrilled to be invited to share a fun SING-inspired activity of our own. Check it out our super cool (but really easy to make) DIY Kids Microphone Toy…
Easy DIY Kids Microphone Toy
Materials:
- 1-2″ dowel, cut to 6″ lengths (Many large hardware stores will cut to length for you!)
- sandpaper
- paint (optional)
- glitter (optional)
- thick white or black yarn
- glue
- embellishments (i.e. jewels, washi tape, duck tape)
Tip: The kids microphone head can be made in a variety of different ways – with styrofoam balls, old softballs, etc. We went with yarn so we weren’t creating a “need” for styrofoam, to allow for a fun contrast of textures during crafting, for building fine motor skills, and because it takes paint and glue better than styrofoam. Black yarn can be substituted to reduce drying time, but we liked having the option to customize our yarn color with paint.
Directions:
Many large hardware stores will cut dowels to length for you. But if you didn’t have the dowel cut, use a handsaw to cut the dowel down into 6″ pieces, and then use sandpaper to sand any rough ends.
Paint the dowel silver – or whatever color you’d like. (If making this craft for a party or playdate, try to do the painting several hours beforehand in case you need more than one coat.)
Use glue to attach your yarn to your dowel and twist it around to make the microphone head. Modern microphones can be implied by using fewer layers, while the traditional microphone can be implied with several thicker layers. Glue each layer in place to secure.
Decorate the handle of the microphone with embellishments. We chose shiny rhinestones.
Let dry completely, and then rock out with your toy microphone!
