Make BIG Art with Broom Painting!
Big art (using full body movements to create art on a large scale) is something I’ve been wanting to do more of with the kids. It is such a great way to combine creativity with movement and really encourages little minds to think outside the box! And when organizing the girl’s cleaning supplies a few weeks ago, it struck me that their brooms would make awesome large scale paint brushes. My plan was to lay down a roll of paper outside, but after days of battling the wind, I finally gave up and let the broom painting take place straight on the sidewalk.
Big Art Broom Painting
It was a very different, but awesome art experience! We started with trays of straight tempera paint, but quickly discovered that adding water helped the paint stay on the brooms a little longer. Emily, who happened to be my only little artist this day, used the big broom to make long squiggly designs. She liked watching the trail of color follow her as she swept the broom along the pavement.
She enjoyed swishing it back and forth around her body!
The small broom was fun too! It was a little better at applying more color. She enjoyed making large swatches of color on the sidewalk and even painted a few of our rocks!
I was afraid that the tempera paint would stain the sidewalk if we left it on too long, so when she appeared to be done I grabbed some dish soap and a scrub brush and we went to town washing our art away! With the sidewalk covered in colorful foam and bubbles, washing up was as much a part of the artistic process as the painting itself!
We made fun designs and foot prints in the soap and enjoyed watching the colors swirl and mix together!
Going BIG with broom painting was definitely a fun way to spice up our art time! Have you tried anything new and exciting with your art lately?

This broom painting is SUCH a brilliant and fun way to have some big art fun with the kids. And perfect for those last few weeks of Summer weather, too. Thanks, Jessica!

We have to try this. Although, I don’t think we could do it on the pavement (sidewalk) here in UK, the neighbours would frown upon the weird home schooling family (us) AGAIN!! Lol. Definitely do it on the patio though. We have been making weird things with pipe cleaners (apparently they are now called chenille sticks, way posher) and googly eyes. Monsters, I suspect, but who knows?
