Setting Up A Kids Service Learning Project
Teaching my kids to serve others and have compassion is so important to me, yet seems to always get put on the back burner when family life gets busy. So when I was given the challenge to utilize Razoo.com to create a fundraiser for a sponsored post, I knew that it was something I wanted to get my kids involved in. Here’s how I built a service learning project around my son’s current obsession interest…
How We Set Up Our Interest Based Service Learning Project with Razoo
- Identify the Child’s Interest – This was easy for us. Over the last few months, Sawyer has been obsessed with all things SNAKES. It’s all he talks about… all day.
- Research the Interest & Identify a Need – For months we’ve been researching snakes through books, on TV and Netflix, at the pet store. We’ve been setting up habitats and using small and large toy snakes for imaginative play. We’ve been hunting and searching to see one outdoors. Through his research, Sawyer has determined that snakes get a pretty bad rap and are often killed out of needless fear. And he can even tell you which ones are endangered. So we knew there was a need for more awareness and education about snakes and their importance in our world.
- Find & Choose a Charity – Since we’d identified a need associated with snakes, we knew there must be a charity already raising funds for their conservation. Razoo made it easy peasy to find one with their simple nonprofit search while creating a new fundraiser. We settled on The Center for Snake Conservation. If you’re raising money for the “social good,” you can do so without a nonprofit, too.
- Decide on A Goal & Reward – Sawyer has been begging to go to Reptiland to see the snakes there this Summer. I decided to incorporate that into our service learning as a reward for once we’ve reached our goal. We set our goal for $100.
- Consider Gifts for Donations – To keep Sawyer motivated and involved, I thought it would be fun to have him make little gifts to give those who donate. He’s going to design a card that we can print to send to those who donate $10 and will include an original snake drawing and photos from Reptiland for those who donate $20.
- Follow Razoo’s Easy Set-Up Steps – We created a FREE account with Razoo and clicked “FUNDRAISE” to follow the easy steps to set up our fundraiser.
- Make Brochures – We haven’t done this yet, but having the kids get involved with making brochures that they can pass out to family and friends when they solicit donations. Include information about the cause and the nonprofit organization and some cute drawings, too. Through it’s creation kids can practice research skills, writing, design, and art!
- Practice the Pitch – Use role playing to practice how your child should approach family and friends for donations. This is a great opportunity for kids to practice public speaking and manners.
We’ve only gotten as far as setting up our fundraiser. When Sawyer gets home from his vacation with his dad we’ll be making brochures and soliciting our family and friends for donations. I can’t wait to see his excitement and learning!
