This mama loves a good creative challenge. So when I was given the challenge to create a DIY kids Halloween game using toilet paper, I was like, “Game On!”
Of course, we all know toilet paper is perfect for Halloween Mummy costumes and games, but I was inspired by the shape of the roll: round like a pumpkin. Check out the kids-friendly pumpkin toss game I came up with: Punkin Chunkin!
Chunk a Pumpkin DIY Pumpkin Toss Game
Supplies for a Pumpkin Chucking Pumpkin Tossing Game for Halloween
Making a family-friendly Halloween party game can be tricky. You don’t want a game that’s too scary at a kids Halloween party, because every child’s scare tolerance is different. But a pumpkin chunkin’ game is always a safe bet! And, using toilet paper to make the pumpkins for this simple game adds a silly spin the kids will love. Plus, the soft DIY pumpkins are lighter and safer for preschoolers and toddlers to toss than real pumpkins.
With just some orange and green felt and a hot glue gun, you can transform everyday toilet paper rolls into whimsical pumpkins perfect for kids to toss for some “punpkin chuckin'” fun!
First, Transform Toilet Paper Rolls into Pumpkins!
The toilet paper pumpkins take a little time to make, but they’re adorable and so worth it. Plus, you can save them to play this fun game at future Halloween parties, October Fest, or Fall Festivals. Or, you could even use your mini toilet paper pumpkins for fall decor.
Find the full tutorial on how to make your toilet paper Halloween pumpkins for this pumpkin chucking game below.
Then, aside from making the toilet paper roll pumpkins, you just need a basket for your kids to “chuck” or toss pumpkins into. I used a harvest-themed bushel basket, but you could use any large basket or even a laundry basket.
How to Play the Pumpkin Chucking Game:
Playing the game is simple enough for preschoolers or even toddlers. The basic idea is to position the basket on the ground, then have the punkin chunkers stand back an appropriate distance before they “chunk a pumpkin” into the basket. Make it more challenging by having them take a giant step back before each toss.
We didn’t really worry about specific distances or counting points to determine a winner. But, if you’re doing your pumpkin chunckin game at a community festival or event, you could provide mark specific distances for different ages. Or, you could make it a contest by assigning different distances different points.
Sawyer and Priscilla had a blast playing their punkin chunk game. And I felt safe having them toss soft, cushy toilet paper roll pumpkins too.

Materials
- felt (6 sheets orange, 2 sheets green)
- 3 rolls toilet paper
- construction paper (1 sheet orange)
- permanent marker
- satin ribbon (Fall or Halloween color/pattern)
- bushel basket (or any large basket/bin)
Steps
To Prepare Pumpkins:
- Overlap short ends of 2 sheets orange felt by about 1 inch, then use hot glue gun to glue together.
- Wrap long orange felt rectangle around outside of one of 3 rolls toilet paper, then glue where it overlaps.
- Fold, tuck, and glue overhanging felt at each end of roll into its cardboard tube.
- Create felt stem by cutting a 3-inch square of green felt, then roll it and glue where it overlaps.
- Cut 2-inch leaf shape out of green felt.
- Tuck and glue ends of felt stem and leaf into tube at one end of felt-covered toilet paper roll.
- Repeat steps 1 through 6 to make two more pumpkins (or as many as desired).
To Prepare Basket:
- Cut pumpkin shape out of orange construction paper.
- Use permanent marker to write "Pumpkin Chuckin'" on paper pumpkin.
- Punch hole in top of paper pumpkin and use satin ribbon to tie it onto bushel basket.
To Play the "Pumpkin Chuckin'" Game:
- Position basket on ground.
- Have child stand about 10 feet from basket (or closer/further according to age/ability).
- Have child try to "chuck" (i.e., toss) toilet paper pumpkins into basket.
Notes
Game Variations and Adaptations:
This “Pumpkin Chuckin'” game is easy to adjust for kids of any age and/or ability. Try some of these ideas…- Adjust distance between the child and basket (i.e., closer = easier).
- Adjust size of basket (i.e., smaller = more challenging).
- After getting a pumpkin in the basket, have child take a step back before “chuckin’” the next pumpkin.
- Awards points to practice math skills.
- Use multiple baskets placed in a row (i.e., farther away = more points).
