An Easy Mama Craft!
I have a hard time finding time to craft as a mom, and when I do it’s usually something I’m making for my kids. So I’m really excited to have Tonya of The Crafty Mummy here to share a “mama craft” at the beginning of each month. Let’s see what she has in store for us to craft for our little ones this month…
Little girls love pretty hair things! But they can become expensive. So here’s a quick and easy way for you to make some pretty hair ties for your girls. (We call them “hair ties” here in Australia – you know, those elastic things that hold a ponytail together? But I’m thinking maybe you have a different name for them in the U.S.? Or wherever you are reading from! Isn’t the internet fabulous!?)
Covered Button Hair Tie – An Easy Mama Craft
Supplies:
- covered button kit
- scissors
- scraps of fabric
- hair ties
Steps to Make these Button Hair Ties:
First, make a covered button.
I’ve been wanting to make some of these for a while. I’ve been saving up my fabric scraps!
You can cover them with any fabric. If you were making an outfit, you could easily use some scraps to create a matching hair tie.
You can read about making the buttons over at The Crafty Mummy and see the little Vine video I made.
Next, attach your hair tie.
Now that you have a covered button, you need to attach a hair tie. I tried to use quite thick ties because my Little Miss has quite thick hair, but they were quite difficult to get through the button loop. You may wish to use either bigger buttons or thinner hair ties.
Here’s the step-by-step:
-
Fold your hair tie flat like a line
-
Push one end of the hair tie through the back of the button
-
Now you have a loop on each side of the button shaft
-
Thread one loop through the other loop
-
Pull tight
All ready to wear!
Tonya of The Crafty Mummy dabbles in lots of different crafts – patchwork, quilting, cross-stitch, scrapbooking, knitting, crochet, and sewing. Her blog, The Crafty Mummy, is the record of projects she has done, and the projects she dreams of getting to, with some blogging and social media thrown in! She also sells her handmade wares in her Shop.
These are so adorable. I love that they can be made to match a certain outfit or dress. Priscilla will love them. Thanks, Tonya!

Greetings, what size button covers did you use? Thanks.

Since this post was contributed by a guest author, I am not sure what size was used. But it seems to me that you could use any size you want. If I were to guess what size she used, I would say Button Size 30, which makes 3/4″ buttons.

These are great! One of the best hand-made crafts I’ve seen. And there’s really no upward age limit. I can imagine pre-teens and even teens going crazy over creating and USING these!
