Use the Light Table for Learning Shapes!
Here’s a simple shape sorting activity for the light table that’s perfect for toddlers and preschool kids who are learning shapes. All that you need are some clear plastic cups (ours are individual applesauce containers from our recycling stash) and some translucent shape links (ours are from the Dollar Tree).
I set up the invitation to sort on the light table as follows, putting one shape into its own separate container.
And here are all the shapes successfully sorted.
Then my boys decided to grab some magnifying glasses to take a closer look while they were learning shapes.
They also used the magnifying glasses for some imaginative play by turning the magnifying glass and the plastic cups into pots and pans to do some cooking. Here’s some pictures of their imaginative cooking play.
I absolutely love how my boys can take a simple light table invitation and turn it into something completely different and unexpected.
Married to her high school sweetheart, Dyan is a stay at home mom to two boys, J and K, who also teaches piano part time out of her home. She began her blog “And Next Comes L” in March 2013 after some mom friends encouraged her to share her creative ideas. You can read more about how her blog came to be here. She loves to dabble in all things creative and crafty, but particularly enjoys making homemade toys and quiet books for her kids.
I always love Dyan’s light table ideas. Her boys must have so much fun and never even realize the learning happening. Thanks so much, Dyan!
