Turn Colorful Kid Art into Awesome Christmas Gifts!
Even though I’ve been divorced from Sawyer and Priscilla’s dad for a number of years, I still have them get him Christmas gifts each year. They love shopping for him and I love fostering that sense of appreciation and giving in them. But this year, I thought I’d try something a little different (more personal and less expensive, too!), and have them make some art for their dad and step-mom for their Christmas gifts. And to make it just a little more fun and gift-worthy, we had their adorable kid art printed into posters using the Walgreens Photo App. Here’s how we did it…
Kid Art Posters for Handmade Gifts
First, I had the kids get to creating! We used a basic oil pastel and watercolor technique. I had them sketch their design out with a pencil first. Then trace over their lines with a black oil pastel. (If you don’t have oil pastels, you can also use black crayon.)
And finally paint it with vibrant watercolors. The oil pastel lines help to keep the watercolors from mixing together and makes a fun graphic look.
Sawyer personalized his art to he and his dad’s interests: snakes and football! How about that football playing snake?!
And Priscilla did some colorful abstract kid art for her step-mom with her signature swirls, hearts, and rainbows. Perfect!
After they were all done and dry, I snapped a picture of each kid art piece with my phone and used the easy Walgreens Photo App to create and order the 11×14″ poster prints. (Actually, after taking the photos, I added them to my google drive so I could use my laptop to open them up and do a quick edit and add a border using PicMonkey.com. But I later realized that you don’t have to do that at all, as Walgreens Photo App has convenient editing capabilities right in their app. So you can actually do the entire thing, right from your phone!) While placing the order using the app, I was able to set the print and pickup location to my local Walgreens and pick up the printed kid art posters within an hour!
You could also order Canvas Prints through the Walgreens Photo App, but I opted for the less expensive poster prints that I then put in an inexpensive frame. And with a coupon code I found online (*wink* *wink*), we were able to have super quick and awesomely cute and personal kid art poster Christmas gifts for under $15 a piece! Super fast, creative, and no trudging out in the snow and cold with three kids in tow to the busy stores. And I get to keep the original art. (Yes, I had an ulterior motive…) Score!
