Do You Have Happy Kids – With Healthy Smiles?
Well my kids sure seem happier when they get to skip their tooth brushing. They’re getting better at it; they only whine now when they’re especially tired and want to head right to bed. And we all know that letting the kids get out of that important tooth brushing routine can lead to MUCH unhappiness. Did you know:
Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in America, affecting 50 percent of first graders and 80 percent of 17-year-olds. OralHealthAmerica.org
FIFTY PERCENT of first graders! Wow. Makes you want to scoot the kids to bathroom to brush and floss right now, doesn’t it? But did you also know that chewing gum – Trident Gum – can help your kids have a healthy smile, too?
Chewing Trident for 20 minutes after eating and drinking helps to clean and protect teeth.
Well I don’t think they’ll whine about that!
Trident Partners with Smiles Across America & Soccer Star, Alex Morgan
Each year Trident supports Oral Health America’s Smiles Across America program to help bring kids dental care who cannot afford it or access it. In fact, they reach over 400,000 kids annually! As part of this year’s initiative, for every pack of Trident gum purchased during the week of September 15th, Trident will donate to Smiles Across America – up to $200,000. And this year Trident is also getting kids focused on oral health by partnering with Olympic gold medalist and National Women’s Soccer League star, Alex Morgan.
Alex’s Personal Oral Care Tips for Kids:
- Brush teeth twice a day, for at least two minutes each time: The first thing I do each morning and last thing I do before I go to bed is brush my teeth.
- Floss: It’s annoying to have food caught between your teeth, so I make a point to floss once a day to remove food where a brush just can’t reach.
- Visit a dentist regularly: To keep your mouth healthy it’s important to visit a dentist regularly.
- Chew Trident sugar-free gum: I always keep a pack of Trident sugar-free gum with me. Four out of five dentists would recommend Trident – they must know what they’re talking about…
- SMILE! Confidence is everything: I get to meet a lot of amazing fans at games, so I have to practice my smile. Everyone looks better when they flash a big smile!

My family and I are big on rewarding good behavior. We have huge charts in various parts of our house and every time you complete one of the tasks on the char, you grab a sticker and put it on the chart.

We make brushing our teeth fun, and also try to limit the sugar and bad foods.

The tips and tricks I have for keeping my kids’ smiles healthy is making it fun, we use a small hour glass timer, let the kids pick there own toothbrush out and toothpaste, and use a oral rinse that changes the plaque a different color to show what they missed.

I keep a chart in the bathroom along with a timer and my kids get a star every time they brush their teeth for 1 minute each time they brush their teeth a day. At the end of the month, if you brushed your teeth at least 2 times per day they get $20 to spend. I know I am bribing them a little but when they get into junior high they will just be in the habit and I won’t reward them anymore.
