Getting Active Indoors with Fun and Function!
My Sawyer and J.C. have Sensory Processing Disorder and Sawyer has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. These two are ALWAYS on the move; seeking out motion and strong sensory input in whatever (not always appropriate) way they can. That kind of activity is easy to get outside and on the playground but with winter on its way, I’ve started to focus more on finding them some acceptable ways to meet their needs indoors. Their occupational therapists recommend any toys, games, or obstacle courses that get them lifting, pushing, pulling, spinning, and moving. Some families create sensory spaces with swings, mats, and crash pads, but we don’t have the space in our home. So when we were sent a Soft Saddle Scooter and Crawl and Calm Resistance Tunnel to try out, I was thrilled! Here’s our review…
The Fun and Function Soft Saddle Scooter: Reviewed
I’ve never been a fan of store-bought ride-on toys. We don’t need cutesy cartoon characters, annoying sounds or blinking lights. My kids (nearly 3, 6, and 8) are getting too big and rough for the cheap plastic ride-on toys you find in stores. THIS – the Fun and Function Soft Saddle Scooter – is exactly what we needed.
It came ready to go – NO ASSEMBLY REQUIRED! – with smooth moving and spinning casters and a somewhat cushy but tough and supportive foam seat. We pulled it out of the box and they were off!
It’s low to the ground, for more security and a great leg workout, too. And it comes in two sizes – small and large. We got the large so that all of the kids could use it. And they sure do. They love pulling and pushing one another around. While this is perfect for my kids’ special sensory needs (hello proprioceptive and vestibular input!), it’d be an awesome choice to have indoors for any typical kids, too!

The Fun and Function Crawl and Calm Resistance Tunnel: Reviewed
My kids use their pop up tunnel lots. So when we got this resistance tunnel, I thought it’d be a hit. It took a couple times to coax J.C. through, but once he did, he wanted to go through over and over again. It’s essentially a long tube of stretchy fabric and gives great pressure and compression when a kiddo crawls through. We love to incorporate this into our obstacle courses or put puzzle pieces at one end and the puzzle to place them in at the other. And the best part: it just nests right in our basket of sensory supplies when not in use; perfect for our small house!

My kids love that it’s low to the ground. And I do think that gives them even more leg exercise that way, too.
