My kids swarm the kitchen, pawing through bowls overflowing with fruit and canisters full of granola bars. I swear they think they need to eat every hour in the summertime.
We jokingly say, “They don’t know what it’s like to be hungry.” But it’s actually no joke.
Especially when you learn, according to the latest government report released in September 2015, children were “food insecure” at some point during 2014 in 9.4% of U.S. households with children. Upon reading those disheartening statistics, my mind immediately jumps to my own children, who have no idea how lucky they are to be in a food-abundant instead of food insecure household.
My heart hopes my children never become a part of that statistic. And my mind wonders… How can I raise kids who do understand hunger and empathize with the hungry?
You educate yourself. You educate your kids.
And you serve others and fight hunger together.
I’m not saying I do those things well. Or at all. I need to do better with teaching empathy and family service as much as any other busy mom. But, Tyson Foods and Sam’s Club are teaming up to fight hunger and invited us to share their hunger-fighting mission, so what better time to find inspiration and ideas.
5 Easy Ways to Fight Hunger – as a Family
1. Read Children’s Books about Hunger – How do I teach my kids about a topic I’m not sure I understand enough to teach? Learn together through books! Check out this list of 10 children’s books to help kids understand hunger. (via Lasso the Moon)
2. Have the Kids Pick a Recipe before Donating Ingredients – Make donating to your local food bank more fun for the kids by letting them pick their favorite recipe or one from your favorite recipes on Pinterest. Then gather all the ingredients for the recipe to bag up and deliver to the food bank. (via JDaniel4’s Mom)
3. Share a Meal with a Family in Need – Similar to the above idea, let the kids help pick a recipe, gather the ingredients. But then deliver them anonymously – with this free printable tag – to the doorstep of a local family in need. (via B-Inspired Mama)
4. Host a Neighborhood Food Drive – This might not seem easy, but this post on Edventures with Kids outlines exactly how to do it, including providing a free printable flyer. (via Edventures with Kids)
5. Be Hunger Heroes – Take the kids to Sam’s Club to stock up on participating Tyson®, Jimmy Dean®, and State Fair® branded foods for your freezer and feed the hungry while you’re at it! The 4th annual Hunger Heroes Tyson® Back to School program makes it easy-peasy.
“Tyson Foods and Sam’s Club are teaming up to fight hunger. We’ve donated 1 Million meals over the last few years, help us double that and donate 1 Million this year alone.”
Just look for the Hunger Heroes label on the following tasty and convenient products:
- Tyson® Chicken Nuggets
- Tyson® Crispy Strips
- Tyson® Popcorn Chicken
- Jimmy Dean® Pancakes & Sausage
- State Fair® Corn Dogs
- Jimmy Dean® Mini Pancake Sandwiches
- Jimmy Dean® Stuffed Hashbrowns
- Tyson® Frozen Chicken Breasts
For every bag or box sold of specially marked packages, Tyson Foods will donate a 4 oz. serving of protein to a child in need.
Nothing like making a difference while stocking your own freezer with easy meal solutions. Or even better, have the kids help pick out a few to then deliver to the local food bank, too.
